I was recently in the market for a KopyKake and heard from cookie friends that there is an alternative called an Artograph Design Master. I ended up buying one because of the price and features and I absolutely love it. It comes with both a reduction and magnification lens and 1 250 light bulb. For many designs, I can use the projector with the room lights on. They had an older model called the Design Master II with 2 bulbs, but I don't believe they carry it anymore.

I bought mine used on Ebay, but have had great experiences with Artograph customer service. They are also sold on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Artograp...master+art+projector

I just wanted to let people know about a great alternative to the KopyKake if they are in the market for a projector. I even think the Artograph is more attractive.

Great tip! How is it different than the Kopykake, do you know? It looks exactly like my Kopykake, except it's black.

Another suggestion - there are a lot of projection apps on the iPad. One called Camera Lucida also allows you to upload images and project them onto a work surface. Another cookier wrote a tutorial about using it a few months ago (darn, can't find it). So if you're already an iPad user, this can also be an economical way to go.

The main difference I see is that the Artograph comes with both a reduction and enlargement lens, whereas the reduction lens is sold separately with the Kopykake. I do know that the regular Kopykake lens does some sort of reduction, so I don't know how that differs from what the Artograph comes with. On the Artograph, you take out and flip over the lens to switch from reduction to enlargement. I haven't used the Kopykake, so I can't tell you about any sort of side by side comparisons, I just know I love my Artograph and it does everything I need it to do.

That was Sarah over at Klickitat Street http://www.klickitatstreet.com...ookie-with-ipad.html.

With the Camera Lucida app, the image isn't projected to the cookie, you view the cookie through the ipad/iphone...this can be a challenge at first but with some practice, it becomes more natural.

I could say a few things about my kopykake although I may have the less decorating experience from everyone in this place (started last October). I bought a kopykake projector recently and I have to say that it's a great!I have the 300xk model, bought from the UK and it has also one bulb but I can work very good with day light. Also, the lense is for dual use.You can reduce and enlarge with the same lense. The only thing you have to do is turn it upside down. They sell an extra reduction lense if you need to reduce the image further.Hope my post was useful!

Hello, i also have an artograph and it does work for me but it's very difficult to focus so that the image is clear. i wonder if the kopycake focuses better than the artograph? or, and i just using the artograph incorrecty? lol. i find that i can focus if i make it larger or smaller by moving the lens up and down, but once i get the size i want, sometimes the image is fuzzy and i cannot focus the image wihtout making it larger or smaller. is this normal for projectors?

thanks much in advance!

I don't think the Kopykake focuses all that well either, if that's any consolation.

I have a reduction lens too, but don't find it works that well. I have to move the lens (whole arm with lens) up and down a lot to focus, and it's usually pretty grainy even at best focus. But maybe I was expecting too much clarity.

I don't own a kopykake since my cookies making is purely an hobby! But I bought and use the Camera Lucida App which is availabe for iPhone and iPad at € 4.99. As Judy mentioned before, it not projects the image but while looking at the screen of your device you see both the image you want to reproduce and the surface below (i.e. your cookie and your hand).

At first I thought it was more difficult to use, because you have to watch the screen and not your hand. In reality, it's very very easy to use with huge results... and it's very very cheaper than any projector.

Of course you cannot pipe directly on the cookie, you need to trace it with a marker... so this could be a con if you have to do a lot of cookies!

I suggest it to everyone who cannot afford (for different reasons) a projector!

But you need to buy an iPad or iPhone to use it, right? I've used it and think it works best on the iPad . . . less awkward, as the screen is bigger. For some people, the iPad or iPhone could be a big investment.

I use it on my iPhone since I don't own an iPad yet, but I agree that a bigger screen would be better... But I have to admit that it's not that bad on an iPhone too, once you've found the right support (in my case a tall glass or my baby's Lego). Of course you need to own that kind of device. I don't know if they created the same app for the Android yet... Hope so since the Apple device aren't exactly cheap (on the contrary)! I agree they could be a big investment for someone... I don't know if comparable to a kopykake (don't know the price) but still very big!
