This questions comes up a lot in cookie space, so I wanted to get the ball rolling. Thoughts? I've also attached a fun poll!

Many of these machines (Pegasus, Duff, and #ABCS) look identical except for the color of the stripe across the top. I suspect they're all made by the same company and re-branded for distribution. Though I'm not sure.

If the shape of the compressor body is the same, and the gun is the same, then yes, that very likely is the case.  "The Sugar Art" is the company that manufactures the Pegasus Airbrush, but that's just their default branding.  If you call them up and tell them to rebrand them, and you order enough, they'll do it.

I'm new to airbrushing, can you help me get the right one. I want to use it for cookies and cakes of course and I think there are 2 kinds of triggers. Would it be best to get just the pull back trigger or the full motion trigger. I'm thinking I might have more diversity with the full motion trigger but it might be harder to learn in the beginning. What do you think.....

Hi, I believe many of the airbrushes commonly used by cookiers (Duff, Pegasus,  ABCS) are in fact the same machine, just branded differently (see Mike's comment above; he knows a lot about airbrushes). People's overall experience with these machines (at least according to the poll above) has been very good. So they may be a good place to start. I can't comment much on the trigger question, but I feel I have a lot of control with the one on my ABCS machine.

I have been looking at the MASTER Cake decorating airbrush kit and was wondering about it.  Anyone else use it?  I first discovered it when it was featured as a giveaway on FB.  It is reasonably priced considering all the stuff it comes with.

I have the Master Airbrush and was disappointed in the gun itself.  Even with the trigger all the way forward, it doesn't always cut off the color flow.  Am very new to airbrushing and knew there would be a learning curve but didn't expect to deal with an inconsistent tool in addition to the new skills.

I have a Badger Model 200 series air brush, which I have owned for many years now and has air brushed many a cake and many many marzipan fruits too! as yet I have not used it on cookies.... time to have a try I feel xx

I just bought my very first airbrush (Cassie Brown), I haven't had the time to give it a try (had to finish 130 cookies for today), but I have plenty of ideas going on in my mind.

Any reviews about this brand?

Greetings from Qatar,

Hi Belle, may I ask you if you like your DinkyDoodle airbrush? Is the compressor noisy? I found a website here in Italy who sells it at a reasonable price and I'd like to buy it... I like it because the compressor seems very small! Other Italian brands have a larger compressor... Is it easy to use? It would be my very first airbrush (can't wait... I kinda obsessing over airbrushing)!! Thanks!

I have the Wimzy Creations Airbrush Pro System, and it is wonderful! I have been recommending it to all of my cake decorating friends. It's a really good beginners kit, and easy enough for experienced users. I let one of my friends (she owns a cake business) use it and she loved it so much she got herself one. I got it from Cake Supplies 4 U.

UPDATE TO MY REMARKS: I recently bought a Pegasus without moisture trap (and with only one speed/pressure setting) and found it pretty useless compared to my ABCS with moisture trap and three pressure settings. I had the latter for years, and NEVER experienced any plugging/clogging, but I couldn't get metallic colors I had once easily gotten through the ABCS through the Pegasus. They just sat in the cup and never moved! I'm going to scrap my Pegasus and try to find another ABCS or a more powerful commercial airbrush. (P.S. The mechanical trigger on my ABCS broke after four or more years, which is why I went in search of a new one.)

I just received my DinkyDoodle airbrush system! Yay! The DVD was missing from the box. The company I ordered from told me DinkyDoodle no longer includes the DVD , yet the box states that it is included. Anyone ordered one recently? If so, did you have the DVD included?

I have a Master airbrush gun and compressor. It's a dual action gravity feed. The compressor has a water trap, an automatic shutoff, a holder for 2 guns and I can set the psi to whatever I want (vs high/med/low).  I do cakes as well so I bought this one. At first it was a bit frustrating because it's very temperamental and I was inexperienced with airbrushing. But after a few times practicing and figuring out how to thoroughly clean it, I'm very happy with it. They probably all work fine, there's just a learning curve. I make a point to clean it well after each use.

I bought the DinkyDoodle last month and it did come with the DVD.  It is very easy to use. I bought it direct from their site in England so if I were you I would send them a quick email and perhaps they will send you the DVD.  Good luck.!

Julia...you might see if ABSC is able to repair/refurbish you airbrush. I know that Iwata offers this service.

I know this is an old thread but hopefully someone sees this! LOL. I have never airbrushed cookies before but really want to start learning. I see all these cookie/cake decorating airbrush kits with little tiny compressors but if I already have an air compressor (it's much larger at 6 gallons) can I just buy extensions to use in order to use it for airbrushing? I hope that makes sense. Sorry if it is a dumb question. TIA!

Hi Jennifer, I just took an airbrushing class w/ Creative Cookier (amazing!!!). Anyway, that size compressor would send your cookies flying across the room. You really need a smaller compressor, one that doesn't go higher than 15psi.  Hope that helps!!

I got a DinkyDoodle for Christmas from my son. Yes, a DVD was included. I have used it once (I'm a newbie), just practicing with coloring book pages and a few stencils on practice cookies. So far, so good!

I got one in the last few months to test it - had the DVD as well. Dawn has a number of videos on her site or on YouTube, I think, so you can probably find most of the same content in either of those places.

Hi, @Ghasan887! Great question, but the wrong spot for it. Few are likely to see it under this unrelated topic. I've forked it (moved it) to a new topic of its own, where others are more likely to see it. In the future, please start new topics for new questions, but be sure to search the forums first (use Advanced Search feature under magnifying glass icon in upper right of site) to make sure the question wasn't already asked.

Others, please answer the black coloring question in the new topic I created (link above) and not here.

Thanks!

I'm not sure the ABCS is readily available anymore, but I think it was the same basic system as the Pegasus, which is the same as Duff and Dinkydoodle. Many of the airbrush systems serving the cookie market are just private-labeled versions of the same thing sourced from China. There are now better airbrushes available to the cookie sector too (I'll be coming out with my own, in fact, in a couple of months; it's an advancement on all I've seen serving this sector so far.)

(A.M.A.)  I'm so glad to hear that Julia . I'm definitely going to put your new airbrush system as my number one I *want* that for Christmas list

I will  keep a lookout for your airbrush system in a few months.  But in the meantime I have a baby shower coming up in the beginning of May that I have to start practicing for LOL. Thanks again Julie!

I don't have a firm release date yet, though I am fairly certain it won't be next month since I am traveling for a while and we still have several design issues to sort out.

Great! Thanks! Yes, I will certainly announce its release here and on Facebook.

Hi Julia,

Do you have any updates to share about possible release dates for your airbrush? I need to purchase one relatively soon and would love to wait to hear what you have come up with, if possible.

Thanks!

Julia,  Glad to see your update re the release of your airbrush.  Since it's your research and design, it will probably be the best on the market.

I'm not even close to needing an airbrush, but I want an airbrush. Gotta sell a lot of cookies first, and by then I should be ready for one.

I think we're still a couple of months away. I am headed to my partner's business to test compressors this Friday/weekend, so I'll have a better idea after then.

Although I have 2 airbrush kits already (not all that thrilled with either of them or my compressor). I'm eager to see what you come up with Julia after you've completed your research and design .

All the best as you continue on Julia!!

I'm in the same situation.  I have 2 airbrushs and I'm not happy with either.  I've been wondering if the airbrush color might be the culprit.

I truly doubt it's the color. My airbrush is awesome and works great with Chefmaster, AmeriColor, and Dinky Doodle colors, among others. I'm now just working on finding the best compressor to go along with it.

Out of curiosity, which two airbrushes do you have and why aren't you happy with them? (Feel free to PM or email me, if you'd prefer to say in private!) Thanks!

Thanks for your patience. The airbrush part has been done for a while, but we're still working on finding the best compressor to partner with it. We want everything to be as wonderful as it can possibly be. Still hoping to release before Christmas, but exact date is not firm yet.

Hi Julia!  I'm waiting for your perfect airbrush. My aunt that lives in the USA told me what I want for christmas 😄😅. I said an airbrush but I will wait for yours! Waiting here in Peru 😊😍

Hi there Julia!

I was wondering if there was a firm release date for your airbrush system and will it be compatible with UK power supply?  Thank you so much. X

Sometime in April is all I can say. My partner is still working on the launch web site, and I don't have any control over how quickly he works. He promised this month, and that's what I'm going with for now. Yes, we will have 110V and 220V versions.

Hello all, I know I have seen many threads here in the past about airbrushing machines, techniques, and recommendation. However, when I do a search for them, I get no results.icon_sad.gif

I am ready to purchase an airbrushing machine, but I just do not know which one to get. For those who use an airbrush, which machine do you use, recommend? I am looking for something affordable, but obviously good quality.

Here's what I came up with when I did a search: https://cookingtimejournal.com...rating-airbrush-kits

Which one would be a good choice?

If you have link to threads about this, I will take those as well.

I would have recommended my JULIA airbrush system, but it is out of stock now and I am no longer working with that partner for various reasons. I love and work with my JULIA airbrush everyday, however. I am hoping to launch another (similar) system in the not-to-distant future with another company. In order to give you a good recommendation in the meantime though, I would need to know your airbrushing needs - cookies and/or cakes? precision work or broad-brush coverage? etc. In general, I think dual-action airbrushes, like the one I offered, afford much more precision than single-action systems, as you are in control of both air and coloring flow at the same time. But, they will be more expensive. The compressor also matters. I'd avoid ones that are only rated to 15 psi, as some deliver less, which can contribute to a speckled spray pattern. And, if you want to cover cakes, for instance, you'll probably need more psi.

One other important consideration is servicing. If you buy indirectly through a wholesaler online, and/or an airbrush manufactured in China with a big-name private label on it (like Duff's), you are likely going to have trouble locating someone to service it for you if/when needed. That all being said, I think your best service is likely to come from Creative Cookier - her airbrushes are single-action and made in China to her specs, but she's top-notch when it comes to delivering service. I have not used her system, but others seem to like it a lot.

I would have recommended my JULIA system, as I specifically tailored the design to cookie and cake applications. I tested and tweaked it over the course of a year and a half, which I doubt can be said of many of these other systems. However, as I posted on this site about two months ago, I am no longer offering the system for sale. I love it, of course, but I had some differences of opinion with the manufacturer.

Does anyone know anything about THIS PointZero airbrush system? I watched an Amazon video and this was ranked #2.  It gets great reviews on Amazon.  There are several other PointZero airbrush kits that are different prices (due to having different things in the kits), but this video liked this one best.  I read the previous responses and there is one mention called Vogue Air.  I searched for it but cannot find it.  Can someone provide a link?  Thanks.

Don't know the brand, but the compressor looks to be the same as the Master compressor (they all come out of China from one or two places), and that compressor is as good as any. The price is also good, though I'd be wary of buying from Amazon, as the service is likely to be non-existent.

I know this is an old thread, but is the #ABCS Complete Airbrush system still available?   I am having issues with spotty spray with the airbrush system I have (not #ABCS).  I don't know of anyone else who has this problem because it is highly rated.  I have never read a rating of it that is below 5 stars.  I have tried everything and cannot seem to get a smooth spray.  The company sent me another compresser identical to the one that came it and I still have spotty spray.  The max PSI is 30 and I have it turned all the way up (The speed is controlled with a knob).  Can someone recommend an airbrush system to me that will give me smooth spray if the #ABCS is no longer available?

The post is still live (they all are), and it is best to "reactivate" old posts by posting under them as opposed to starting a new one - so thanks. I still have no system I prefer more than my JULIA one that I no longer sell. The feature set is important  - it is dual-action (better control), has a large cup and cap (so no spills and not constantly refilling), runs on a larger compressor (so the spray pattern is less speckled) and has a quick-connect adaptor (to easily swap in guns with different colors). I think the Paasche system has most of these features, though their guns are heavier and harder to handle in that regard. It will be a more expensive system than the single-action ones, however. I have now used most of the smaller single-action systems (Cookie Countess, Creative Cookier, Artfully Designed Creations (ADC), etc.) and they are all still available and good, inexpensive starter systems, but the spray patterns on all tend to be more speckled because their compressors are much lower output. They also have small coloring cups, which I don't much care for. Creative Cookier's has a quick-connect adaptor, and her service is exceptional, so if you go single-action, hers is the way to go.

@Julia M. Usher thank you so much for your reply. The recommendations are really helpful! Though, I got Amazon gift card as a birthday present yesterday, which I am willing to spend on Airbrush, none of the brands mentioned above are available there. Also, I live in Tbilisi, Georgia (Country) and shipping from the USA is expensive and can not afford at this point compressors weighing 10 pounds... so I have three options to choose from: Watson and Webb Airbrushing system, Master Airbrush Multi-Purpose Airbrushing System Kit with Portable Mini Air Compressor or U.S. Cake Supply - Complete Cake Decorating Airbrush Kit... if any of these are familiar to you or the brands that you use and trust, it would be a great help. it will be my first airbrush, so i don't expect it to be the best, but i don't want to be disappointed either, as I really want to learn airbrushing. thank you again!

If you can send me links to all three of these systems (just post them in a comment below), I can look at their features and tell you which one I would get (which I think is best based on its feature set). I am familiar with some Master systems, but not the other two. The other consideration is making sure you can access someone at the company to help with service questions, if and when you have them.

@Bake Queens posted:

you are so kind, Julia, thank you for helping me!

The second one, I think is the best in these options, the compressor seems to be quite powerful for the price and size... Can't wait to hear what you think

1. https://www.amazon.com/Master-...14445818&sr=8-21

2. https://www.amazon.com/Airbrus...2URY?ref_=ast_sto_dp

3. https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...LIL0E0ONXE&psc=1

4. https://www.amazon.com/U-S-Cak...aps%2C312&sr=8-5

I couldn't find the compressor size on the second one, but I have a feeling it's smaller/less powerful than what I use. Also, you're getting two siphon-fed airbrushes with it that you will likely not use - they're not really designed for food coloring. All the others have small compressors, likely to give you speckled spray patterns. This Paasche system is close to what I have, though it has no quick-connect adaptor on the hose that I can see: https://www.amazon.com/Paasche...aps%2C187&sr=8-9

This airbrush is actually what mine was designed from, though this Badger Patriot 105 does not have the quick-connect adaptor: https://www.amazon.com/Badger-...aps%2C453&sr=8-5 My system is hooked up to a 1/5 hp compressor that is nearly identical - if not identical - to the Paasche one in the link above.

If you are just starting out - come to think of it - you might try the TruColor battery-operated, portable one. It's heavy and a bit awkward to handle, and has a small compressor in the handle, but it actually does a pretty decent job and has a big capped cup. I've got a couple of them and sometimes use them. Their spray pattern isn't quite as even as mine, but it's better than some of the smaller ones I mentioned earlier. This one is similar to - if not the exact same - as the TruColor one: https://www.amazon.com/ROADTEC...TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ== (Note: This airbrush is made in China and so you'll see different brands of it, but they are all basically the same machine just private-labelled differently. Likewise, all the compressors come from China, and the US companies just private-label them; the only US-made airbrush guns that I know of are Paasche and Badger. I say this, because any compressor coming out of China is likely to be of unpredictable quality, but that's all we've got to choose from . . .)

I am new to cookie decorating and want to start airbrushing. I realize this is a really old thread and that Julia's airbrush system is no longer available. I also realize there may have been many improvements to airbrush systems for cookie decorating since the last post in 2017.

I could use some advice in what to look for in purchasing an airbrush system personal recommendations, as well as what to avoid when purchasing. Thanks so much!

I have nothing to add. Airbrushes are ages-old tech and not much has changed as far as what's being offered in the cookie marketplace. I still hate the small compressors and small uncapped cups (so many spills)!

Thanks for your help. I read the specs for your Julia system and tried to match those as best I could. Perhaps sometime in the near future, you can find a new partner company to produce your dream airbrush system.

I hope your system works out for you! On the latter comment: Maybe - though I am a bit burnt out on partnerships at present. I am working on a couple of other ventures right now, and they are very slow going. I need to get them launched first, and that will take me through end of the year.
