I have maintained a website through VistaPrint for 7 years and a blog on another website but recently came across another website that will allow me to do both with more options. I've almost finished the new website and knew I would probably have to cancel my first one (I'm paying a monthly fee) in order to activate my 2nd one. However, I came across the fact that I will need to either transfer or connect my domain name to the new website. My head is spinning. Any advice?

I can't personally help, but I just Googled "transfer a domain name" and a lot came up. Perhaps the tech support for your new host could also assist? They ought to do this sort of thing.
If you know who your domain was purchased with I'd just call them and they can walk you through it. It will be pointing the nameserver to the new one (which you'll need to get from your new site provider). If you don't know who your domain is with, you can look it up here: http://whois.domaintools.com/
