Say Hello to Our November Site Artist!

Julia M. Usher
This month's site artist, the creator of the stunning owls you now see staring back at you, is one of our most prolific contributors to the site. Not only has she been a featured site artist at lease three (or is it four?) times, she is also a repeat Practice Bakes Perfect challenge entrant, who often enters each challenge multiple times! Her signature style of boldly painted scenes, often with the added dimension of modeled fondant figurines, is immediately recognizable to anyone who's been...Read More...

Washing Silicone Rolling Mat in Dishwasher

Forum: Tools
Joanna (Cookie Mojo)
Hi, folks! I use a rolling mat like this one https://www.amazon.ca/Norpro-S...asures/dp/B00112499E to roll out my cookies, which I LOVE, but cleaning it afterward is kind of a pain because it is so big. It can be washed in the dishwasher, but I've never figured out how to load it so that it gets clean. Does anyone else use one, and if so do you wash in the dishwasher and how do you load it?Read More...

Dehydrator Pros and Cons

Forum: Tools
The Cookie Cart
Question: Thoughts on dehydrators. I hear they help keep a good shine on the cookie . . . They set the icing quickly and better for shipping . . .they seal the cookie. I've also heard, they dry out the cookie (so adjustments are to be made to recipe). I'm looking into getting one, but figured I'd get the most honest and educated answers here. Do they make that much of a difference? I value your comments.Read More...

New Electric Wall Oven Recommendations

Forum: Tools
Sherrie
I would love to get opinions regarding the purchase of a new electric wall oven (with microwave). My wall oven is on its last leg. It is about 50 degrees off. I have to bake sugar cookies for 16 minutes at 350 degrees (the recipe says bake 6 to 8 minutes). I also have a gas oven but I don't like how it bakes cookies (I only use it for baking other foods). I would love any advice regarding the brand of electric wall oven I should consider purchasing. Thank you.Read More...

Hi, all. The Cookie Connection site recently underwent a software update in which many improvements were made to admin functionality. Plus, one change was made that affects all of you more directly! In the past, you may have noticed that, when selecting emojis in the Cookie Connection entry/editing window on mobile devices , emojis did not reveal as they should. Instead, they showed up in posts as a string of question marks. Well, that bug has finally been fixed! Now, you should see emojis...Read More...

Two-Hour Cookie Decorating Class

Sweethart Baking Experiment
Hey guys! So I've been decorating sugar cookies for about three years now, but I have never actually taught anyone before. My local Makers Mercantile has asked me to do a small 2 hour class sometime near Valentines Day - nothing crazy, but just to give people a small opportunity to play with cookies and do what I do for a few hours. Obviously there would be no flooding or anything that takes a long time to dry. I thought I could bring some pre-flooded heart shaped cookies, and let people do...Read More...

Signature Sugar Cookie Dough + Cocoa??

I have made Julia's Signature Sugar Cookie Dough for probably close to 1,000 cookies adding different flavourings and spices. I am planning on making hockey puck cookies for me nephew's birthday and would like to make them as a chocolate cookie. Has anyone tried adding cocoa to the recipe, and do they turn out as well as the regular ones? Love to hear from an expert. Thanks, everyone!Read More...

A Big TX Hello!!!

Marcip5
Hello! I am a beginner at cookieing and love it! However, being a perfectionistic overachiever . . . well . . . this adventure is teaching me to be very kind and accepting of self. LOL! I live near Ft Worth, TX and have been married for 25 years. We have 2 boys! We adopted the oldest when he was 14; he is now 26, and our youngest was 3 at the time. He is 15 now. We try to live a simple life with the least amount of busyness as we can, but most days are slam packed . We have a small B&B...Read More...

Julia on the "Eat the Evidence" Podcast

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! I had an awesome time live-chatting with Shannon Orr for the Eat the Evidence podcast at the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show a few weeks ago. You can listen to that chat - which touches on everything from judging at the show to teaching international classes and my airbrush launch - here , starting around 1:03:00 (close to the end of the podcast). I also highly recommend that you listen from the start, because podcast host Kim Chapman interviews Michelle Green of The Business of...Read More...

Taste

Do any of you struggle over the fact that (IMHO) sugar cookies with royal icing do not taste good! They look so gorgeous, but I think they taste awful! I struggle with the fact that I like the way they look, but do not enjoy eating them. I guess my waistline says thank you . Am I the only one who feels this way?? TYIARead More...

NEW Craftsy Class with Stephanie Kappel

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! I wanted to alert you to a new Craftsy class by @Stephanie Kappel of Hungry Hippopotamus. I haven't viewed her class yet, but it seems to cover - in great detail - writing with royal icing (every cookie decorator's nemesis), along with many other things! I've also seen her work in person, and it is stunning, so I imagine her classwork in this course is no less. I encourage you to check out Stephanie's new class via this link , or via any of the links you see in the...Read More...

Metallic Paint on Royal Icing Transfers

i have some metallic food paint that I want to paint my transfer with before I place it in the wet royal icing on my cookie. Has anyone tried this? I am curious if the metallic paint will bleed into the wet foundation. I thought it might be easier than painting so many after they are on the cookie and trying to stay in the lines.Read More...

Undecorated Cookie and Icing Kits - How to Package and Price?

This is only my second post and I am not sure if this is done in the right spot!! Last year I gave a kit to a family that had undecorated cookies with the icing. They loved it and want to make it a tradition for Christmas with their kids and grand kids. I am sure you all do this . . . How many cookies and how do you price it?? Any clever ways you box them up?? I would love to get this out to my customers. Thank you ladies! (and gentlemen!). I appreciate any help with this. Stephanie Lang...Read More...
