No Saturday Spotlight This Weekend

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! I regret that I won't be able to do a Spotlight this weekend. As you may or may not know, I have been doing all-day, non-stop stenciling demos at So Flo Cake & Candy Expo since Friday. And, with one more day still to go in the expo, I need to reserve my energy (and maximize sleep) for tomorrow. I hope you will understand! The Spotlight will resume on next Saturday, May 6. (Thanks for your patience.) In the meantime, I leave you with a few images of my stencil booth and...Read More...

Hi, cookiers, I was wondering if anyone would be happy to share a little informaton about their design process? I find I procrastinate putting a large set together, as I often decorate as I go, and am a little scared to start sometimes in case I dont like the design I do. I am sure there's a better way! Do you tend to sketch first and come up with the full design before you start, or do you finalise the small details as you go? For small sets (i.e., set of 3), I tend to have a plan, but for...Read More...

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! My site tech guys (Hoop.la/Social Strata) will be doing routine maintenance on the systems that power Cookie Connection for the purpose of ensuring and improving the security and stability of your service. This maintenance is scheduled for April 28, 2017, from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time. During this maintenance period, there will be occasional site outages of up to 30 seconds, but Cookie Connection should be functioning normally for the vast majority of the...Read More...

Mark Your Calendars for Our May Live Chat!

Julia M. Usher
Lucky us! In the month of May, we're continuing our live chat series with CookieCon 2017 instructors , and we've got another wonderful featured guest for you: Teri Lewis of @tweets...cookie connection (completely unrelated to this Cookie Connection, BTW)! Though I was first dazzled by Teri's signature sparkly cookies at the CookieCon premiere some three or four years ago, Teri's medium at CookieCon 2017 was chocolate! There, she explored how to make dimensional elements with both modeling...Read More...

Icing Transfers and Air Pockets

LyndaB
Hey, y'all! I've been having troubles with transfers causing unsightly air pockets when I drop them in wet icing. It usually happens with larger pieces. When I set them down at first it's perfect! After 5 minutes or so this horrid air pocket emerges at an edge. It completely ruins my gorgeous cookie. I've tried setting an edge down and slowly allowing it to set down all the way . . . dropping it flat . . . piping icing on the back of the transfer and then applying. There's no one guaranteed...Read More...

How to Travel with 3-D Name Cookies

Dena's Sweet Delights
Hi, everyone, I have a customer who ordered 3-D name cookies (like the image below, embellishments and all). I've done this before for a customer who was not traveling far. However, this client wants the cookies the night before she travels 50+ miles by car to a wedding. My concern is that they risk breaking while she is en route or the letters separate for some reason. Does anyone have any idea on a way to pack these to ensure they arrive to the site in one piece? Any help is much appreciated!Read More...

Best Shipping Service for Insurance Claims?

Hello! I have been making decorated cookies for over a year, shipping about a third of them. One particular repeat customer has ordered six times in that period and two of her orders have arrived with damaged cookies (no other customers have reported damage). The first order's shipping and insurance was purchased through Etsy, and USPS paid the claim with no issues; the second was through Shipsaver and they want to close my case because they consider cookies to be an excluded item, so I'm...Read More...

Corn Syrup Survey - We Want Your Input!

Julia M. Usher
Hi, in prep for Liesbet Schietecatte's next Toolbox Talk , which is all about corn syrup and its use in royal icing, we're seeking your input on this super quick survey . Please fill it out and share the link - everyone, even non- Cookie Connection members, is welcome to take the survey! Thanks in advance! Again, here's that survey link !Read More...
Hi! I have successfully frozen fully decorated cookies before, but never with luster dust. Specifically, I am painting polka dots on these cookies using Rolkem Gold/Bacardi 151 and a paintbrush (on dried royal icing). I'm worried the freezing/thawing process could somehow affect (smudge, maybe?) the gold polka dots. Has anyone done this? Thanks!Read More...

Using a Cookie Cutter to Make a Design

Does anyone have any tips for using a cookie cutter that makes a design? I've put an example below. It's very simple, but I'm using it in lieu of the actual cookie cutter I want to buy because that one is a licensed character. So, for example, if one were to fill the entire cookie with the light brown, is there a way to then use the smaller pieces to mark where you should put the dark brown? The only thing I can think of is tracing them with a food-safe marker, but I was wondering if I'm...Read More...

Upcoming Cookie Connection Posting Schedule

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! Just an FYI: I will be out of town next weekend and also the following weekend for Easter. That being said, there will be no Spotlight next weekend (April 8/9), but I will try to resume on Easter Sunday when I return from my trip. (If I don't, you'll know I decided to take the holiday completely off! ) Also, the next Practice Bakes Perfect challenge is still targeted to post on April 8 (or 9, depending on my travel schedule), and a wonderful Cookier Close-up should post before then...Read More...
