Say Hello to Our May Site Artist!

Julia M. Usher
Hi! Yes, that site artist is me once again, so we'll skip the usual artist intro and move onto more important matters - like how to get your art featured instead of mine! I'd really, truly love to have more submissions from all of you. One reason is selfish: I'm bored with seeing my cookies. Typically, I've looked at them for countless hours before posting them here, and enough is enough! But the primary reasons are for you. Featured cookiers get noticed by other members, potential...Read More...

Hey, all, as you may know, I will be at SoFlo Cake & Candy Expo later this month, demoing both my stencils and my new airbrush system. I expect to have some awesome show deals for you too, like the ones pictured here: I'll be located in Booth #200 in plain view, very close to the front doors. I hope to see you there! I also wanted to alert you to the show's cookie competition, which I am judging along with Amber Spiegel (SweetAmbs) and Sandie Beltran (You Can Call Me Sweetie). It's got a...Read More...

Hi, all! First, huge thanks to Cookie Connection members @mintlemonade (cookie crumbs) and @Ryoko ~Cookie Ave.! In an effort to lure more Japanese members to this site, they generously volunteered to translate the site's Terms of Use (利用規約) and Photo Posting Guidelines (画像・動画投稿について ―― 投稿する前に必ずお読みください) into Japanese! THANK YOU, LADIES! Now, everyone will find links to the Japanese translations at the top of each of those pages (links above), and also directly below: Terms of Use...Read More...

Hi, all, I've been receiving an unusually large number of questions about how members can edit or delete their own content. It's super important for you to know how to do this, as I typically do not edit posts for people, unless I happen to see a misclassified image or other typo. It can also take me several hours to days to respond to site inquiries like this, as I work several other jobs. That being said, your surest bet for getting a quick answer is to familiarize yourself with our site...Read More...
Hi, all, regrettably, I've recently had to delete some images from challenges and other areas of the site due to lack of compliance with Rule #8 of our posting guidelines, which states that artwork (including characters, from Disney, Hasbro, etc.) cannot be copied and posted here without permission from the creator : http://cookieconnection.juliau...READ-BEFORE-YOU-POST In response to those deletions, some members have asked me why so many licensed character cookies exist on the site,...Read More...

We all have different message-reading tastes, so Cookie Connection has been designed to allow for everyone's individual differences! The site's default email and onsite alert notifications are set to show you most of the site info that you could get notified about, just so you're aware of the site's full functionality. But I recognize that this amount of info may (or may not) be overkill for you. That said, I recommend that you edit your "Notifications" settings as soon as you join the site...Read More...

Hi, if you view this site in Safari, you may be noticing some broken image links. A broken image link will appear as a question mark in a blue box, as in the "Members at the Moment" graphic on the right side of the home page, shown below. Broken image links seem to be an issue with only those images that I have stored on an external site, and only when the site is viewed in Safari. (When viewed in Chrome, for instance, the images are all showing up just fine.) Anyway, I just wanted to let...Read More...

Poly Shrink Bags

Homemade for Heroes
Kinda long . . . Question at the end if you just want to skip to it. I make hand drawn cookies for the military. I do it as a thank you. I don’t sell or take orders and it’s all out of pocket. I am continually floored by the generosity and kindness of the people I’ve met on this journey. Saturday there was a knock on the door and a package left. I hadn’t ordered anything so thought it was a goodie from my son overseas. It was not. It was 500 individual bags for cookies. I was confused, as I...Read More...

General Packaging Advice

Hello! I'm new to the forums and new to the cookie business (custom decorated sugar cookies with royal icing). I'm really struggling with figuring out the best way to package my cookies and was hoping to get some advice on how others do it. I've searched the forum and have some good ideas, but have a couple of specific questions I couldn't really find an answer to: 1) I purchased a heat sealer and have been individually wrapping my cookies for orders where they'll be handed out individually...Read More...

Egg Whites - Health Concern in Royal Icing?

Saige L
Hello! I am inquiring about the health factors when making royal icing with egg whites. Most recipes/blogs that I read clearly state to use MP (meringue powder_ if the cookie will be served to a pregnant lady, child, or immune-sensitive persons. Does anyone have any science backing up the above statement? Any advice you can give would be great! I prefer the taste of royal icing with egg whites and it is cheaper than MP, but don't want to potentially harm anyone! Thank you!Read More...

Fabricake (UK) Recall of Rolkem Super Gold/Special Rose Gold

Forum: Tools
Marie Elgaard
(Not entirely sure where to post this; many apols if it's in the wrong place.) I just heard this morning that Fabricake Sugarcraft Ltd in the UK is recalling Rolkem Super Gold and Special Rose Gold. This only affects these two products, and they are refunding these two product lines if you bought from them (you'll need to return). It affects all sizes, batches and best before-dates. I will post the info and the link to the Food Standards Agency.Read More...

Cottage Food Operations and Meringue Powder

Forum: Legalese
Hi! I am hoping/trying to set up a Cottage Food Operation (CFO) in California for my cookies. I thought I had everything lined up, and have just been told that California doesn't allow meringue powder (or similar) in icing. I have truly cried, it makes me so sad! And I have heard this is not unique to California. It makes absolutely no sense to me that it is allowed in a professional kitchen and not in a home kitchen. Professional kitchen rental is just too expensive for a startup...Read More...

LilaLoa's Latest "Expert Q & A" Blog is Out!

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! As I mentioned about a month ago, several cookie decorators and I are participating in an "Experts Q & A" forum on @LilaLoa's blog. Each month, Georganne asks us a different question about cookie decorating, and you get the chance to see how similar (or different) our answers might be. I'm learning a lot just by reading the others' responses, and I thought you would too, which is why I'll be sharing Georganne's post here each month. This time, we were asked...Read More...

Starting Out and Often Buying Cutters

Forum: Pricing
emilymader
Hi everyone! I am new to the cookie business world. I have a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/cookiecreationsbyemily/ and since I created it a few months ago, I've had 5 orders! My pricing guide is the same as Sweet Sugarbelle (I just created my own document with my own logo but used all her prices) but I'm struggling with constantly having to buy cutters, sine I'm just starting out. I recently purchased the 101 cutter set from Wilton, which has helped a lot, but each project seems to...Read More...

Pearl Sprinkles and Metallic Rods

Jen B
I am fairly new to cookie decorating, and I would like to begin to use sprinkles to decorate my cookies. I recently purchased some sprinkle mixes containing the medium/large pearl sprinkles and metallic rods. Do you use both/either for cookie photography or do you send orders out the door with these items included? I taste-tested both and they're SO hard. I'm afraid that my customers will break a tooth. Also, the metallics are labeled as for decoration only, but why decorate cookies with...Read More...

Best Way to Package Party Favor Cookies?

54mama
Hi all, I'm making cookie favors for my babysitter's wedding shower and trying to sort out the best way to package them. I owe her my sanity and want these to be really special. Each guest will get two 3" diameter cookies. Normally I heat-seal my cookies in 2 mil poly bags, but they don't lend well to adding a bow (the plastic is too thick I think). So, first question...do I put each cookie is its own bag? Or layer them together in one bag? And then, do any of you heat seal and then add...Read More...

New Member Moderation Practices

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! Due to an unfortunate rash of spam/fake members signing up for the site since January 2018, I am moving to a new system of moderating new member signups. In the past, everyone who signed up for Cookie Connection automatically had access to the site, without any moderation/review by me. However, this process has (recently) allowed a large number of fake members (10 to 20 per day) to join, and has created an ENORMOUS amount of cleanup for me - about 1 or more hours each day to delete...Read More...

Photo and Graphic Design by LilaLoa; Permission Granted to Post Here Hi, everyone! I just wanted to alert you that @LilaLoa (aka Georganne Bell) has a new "Expert Q&A" feature on her blog, where she asks a panel of cookiers (yours truly included) a different question each month. This month, it was all about rolling cookie dough ! It's been fun to formulate my answers and to read the sometimes very different responses from the others. Hi, all! I just wanted to give a warm welcome and thank you to Dotty Raleigh of @SugarDotCookies for becoming our latest site advertiser. If it weren't for the contributions of such supporters, Cookie Connection would cease to exist. (That may sound dramatic, but it's true!) So thank you again, Dotty! Also, I wanted to alert you to what Dotty is advertising, as I think it will interest those of you with cookie enterprises, or those aspiring to launch businesses soon. For a while...Read More...

Heads Up: No Saturday Spotlights 'Til May 12

Hi, all! In case you missed my announcement at the end of last week's Saturday Spotlight , here it is again . . . I'll be traveling for the next two weeks (first to SoFlo in Miami and then to teach in the Dominican Republic), so I will be unable to publish Spotlight s for the next two weekends. Aha! Got your attention again! As it turns out, I'm sponsoring and judging another great cookie competition this year at the Show Me Sweets Cake & Candy Convention , on September 8-9, 2018 in St. Charles, Missouri. CK Meringue Powder

Asmita
Hi, I am having issues since the last couple of days with my royal icing. I always use CK brand and use the same recipe and never had a problem like this. When the icing is mixed, I see beige dots or pieces through out the icing and when I try to pipe, it gets stuck in my tips. They are tiny but never before has this happened. Anyone experienced this before or what am I doing wrong? Thanks AsmitaRead More...

New to Royal Icing...

I am a newbie to using frosting sheets and basically icing cookies in general, other than with my kids for the holidays, so I have what many might think is a silly question . . . when I decorate cookies with my kids and make “icing”, I have always used a recipe that I found online with confectionary sugar, milk and corn syrup. It ends up shiny and quite thin. I am looking to decorate my cookies and have more of the thick non-shiny look - what I typically see under an icing or frosting sheet...Read More...
