Hi, everyone! Once again, my tech team at Hoop.la will be doing maintenance next week on the systems that power Cookie Connection . This maintenance period is scheduled for October 5, 2017 from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time. During the maintenance period, there will be occasional outages of up to 30 seconds, but Cookie Connection should be functioning normally for the vast majority of the time. If you have trouble accessing the site during this time, there is no need to alert...Read More...
Hi, everyone! I thought I'd take a different tack with the live chat this month by NOT having a featured guest, but rather encouraging everyone to come at an appointed time to discuss whatever cookie stuff your heart desires. I'd particularly like to encourage newcomers to Cookie Connection to attend, as I and our veteran members would love to meet you more personally. I will, of course, be on hand to moderate the chat and to answer any questions people have for me about the site or anything...Read More...

Introducing Our October Site Artist!

Julia M. Usher
Boo! (Did I scare you?! ) We've got a boo-tiful set of Halloween-themed art for the site this month, but I have a feeling it won't scare you much either. Dubbed "Goofy Goths, Boo Bones, and Candy Curls" by its creator, the very talented @virago , it's more charming and smile-inducing than spooky. Ever since virago submitted this art, now almost a year ago, I've been dying to post it . . . not only are the individual cookies executed to perfection, but the overall...Read More...

Hi, all! First, huge thanks to Cookie Connection members @mintlemonade (cookie crumbs) and @Ryoko ~Cookie Ave.! In an effort to lure more Japanese members to this site, they generously volunteered to translate the site's Terms of Use (利用規約) and Photo Posting Guidelines (画像・動画投稿について ―― 投稿する前に必ずお読みください) into Japanese! THANK YOU, LADIES! Now, everyone will find links to the Japanese translations at the top of each of those pages (links above), and also directly below: Terms of Use...Read More...

Hey, everyone! Just quick reminder that August 24 is the filing deadline for entry forms into my namesake cookie competition (Julia Usher's Decorated Cookie Competition) at Kerry Vincent's annual Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show (OSSAS) , which runs from September 30 to October 1, 2017. As you probably know, I'm a huge proponent of challenges and competitions as a way to test skills and push oneself to new heights, so I sincerely hope you will consider entering. Not only do you reap the rewards...Read More...
Hi, all, I've been receiving an unusually large number of questions about how members can edit or delete their own content. It's super important for you to know how to do this, as I typically do not edit posts for people, unless I happen to see a misclassified image or other typo. It can also take me several hours to days to respond to site inquiries like this, as I work several other jobs. That being said, your surest bet for getting a quick answer is to familiarize yourself with our site...Read More...
Hi, all, regrettably, I've recently had to delete some images from challenges and other areas of the site due to lack of compliance with Rule #8 of our posting guidelines, which states that artwork (including characters, from Disney, Hasbro, etc.) cannot be copied and posted here without permission from the creator : http://cookieconnection.juliau...READ-BEFORE-YOU-POST In response to those deletions, some members have asked me why so many licensed character cookies exist on the site,...Read More...

We all have different message-reading tastes, so Cookie Connection has been designed to allow for everyone's individual differences! The site's default email and onsite alert notifications are set to show you most of the site info that you could get notified about, just so you're aware of the site's full functionality. But I recognize that this amount of info may (or may not) be overkill for you. That said, I recommend that you edit your "Notifications" settings as soon as you join the site...Read More...
Read in Japanese (日本語はこちらから) (Last Translation: August 25, 2017) ________________________________ Hi, all! Before posting images or videos to the Clips area, please review the site's Terms of Use , as well as all of the following posting rules. They are designed to give your images more visibility on the site, to make sure artists are given proper credit for design inspiration and/or source artwork, and to avoid copyright violations. NEW Craftsy Class with Stephanie Kappel

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! I wanted to alert you to a new Craftsy class by @Stephanie Kappel of Hungry Hippopotamus. I haven't viewed her class yet, but it seems to cover - in great detail - writing with royal icing (every cookie decorator's nemesis), along with many other things! I've also seen her work in person, and it is stunning, so I imagine her classwork in this course is no less. I encourage you to check out Stephanie's new class via this link , or via any of the links you see in the...Read More...

Saturday Spotlight: Delayed!

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! I am teaching straight for the next several days, so the Saturday Spotlight , which is in process, will be a bit delayed. It's a feature of the amazing 2017 Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show winners, and promises to be a good one. Stay tuned!Read More...

Taste

Do any of you struggle over the fact that (IMHO) sugar cookies with royal icing do not taste good! They look so gorgeous, but I think they taste awful! I struggle with the fact that I like the way they look, but do not enjoy eating them. I guess my waistline says thank you . Am I the only one who feels this way?? TYIARead More...

Metallic Paint on Royal Icing Transfers

i have some metallic food paint that I want to paint my transfer with before I place it in the wet royal icing on my cookie. Has anyone tried this? I am curious if the metallic paint will bleed into the wet foundation. I thought it might be easier than painting so many after they are on the cookie and trying to stay in the lines.Read More...

Undecorated Cookie and Icing Kits - How to Package and Price?

This is only my second post and I am not sure if this is done in the right spot!! Last year I gave a kit to a family that had undecorated cookies with the icing. They loved it and want to make it a tradition for Christmas with their kids and grand kids. I am sure you all do this . . . How many cookies and how do you price it?? Any clever ways you box them up?? I would love to get this out to my customers. Thank you ladies! (and gentlemen!). I appreciate any help with this. Stephanie Lang...Read More...

No Saturday Spotlight Tonight

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! So sorry, but I won't be writing the Saturday Spotlight (again) this weekend. I just got back from a long day at the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show (it's now 8 pm), and I have to get a good night's sleep tonight because I must drive 6 hours home tomorrow night after working another 12-hour day at the show tomorrow. I'll resume the Spotlight next weekend. Thanks for your understanding! I will, however, be conducting the flour survey drawing later tonight, so do stay tuned for that!Read More...

Hi, there! I’m a hobbyist baker admittedly lacking a thorough understanding of the science behind recipes so have a question: I’m attempting a fairly large scale 3-D project and was originally planning it with gingerbread (Julia’s recipe via http://cookieconnection.juliau...t-cookie-gingerbread ) but my pieces are drooping and ultimately breaking. My previous 3-D project with it produced a similar result, although more manageable as the piece was smaller. With that one I found being kept in...Read More...

Discounting Surplus Cookies

Forum: Pricing
The Woodsy Wife
I recently hosted my first vendor booth at a farmer's market, and had quite a few cookies left over afterwards. So I put them up on my site a couple days later at discounted prices. But I know that some of the people who bought cookies from me at the market follow my page and — though no one mentioned it — I couldn't help but wonder if it's fair to them that the cookie they bought a few days ago for $3 is now being sold for $2. I guess my questions are: At what point are leftover cookies old...Read More...

Royal Icing Not Setting

Homemade for Heroes
I'm following a fast-setting royal icing (RI) recipe. First time was great! Last three were disasters. It's shiny and opaque, so I thought I didn't clean well enough. Today, the fourth attempt, it won't mix past a four-second consistency. I've followed the recipe to a tee. Setting timers and everything. It's heavy to stir, not like you'd expect a four-second constency to be. I have researched here and followed cleaning instructions. Have carefully washed all utensils, and today used a RI...Read More...

Royal Icing on Top of Edible Paper

Blondie's Sweet Shop
I have used edible paper many times in the past, but have never decorated on top of the paper before. Will icing bleed through or cause the paper to deteriorate if you you pipe royal icing detail directly on top of the papers after they are placed on the cookies? I would like to try this to create dimension on logo cookies, but I don't want to ruin them. Any tips for this would be greatly appreciated, thank you!Read More...

Hi, all! As you may or may not know, I'm currently conducting a quick survey about flour use in rolled cookies in preparation for @Liesbet's next Toolbox Talk . If you haven't yet taken that survey, I would love it if you would! You can do so here ! If you have taken the survey (and if you haven't, for that matter), you should know that I recently (just today) added an extra special BONUS QUESTION at the very end (Q15). On September 30 , I'll be drawing one name from...Read More...

After my site support team made some changes to your "Notifications" area a few weeks ago, I've gotten a few questions about how the "Alerts" page works, so I am posting a few clarifications below. BTW, the changes made to the "Notifications" area are very important, as they may affect the volume of automatic notices you get from the site, so PLEASE ALSO READ THIS RELATED POST , if you haven't already. Thanks! Now, for those "Alerts" page clarifications: 1) Alerts cannot be manually deleted...Read More...
Hey, all! I just wanted to extend a public congratulations to @Evelindecora for achieving 100,000 activity points on Cookie Connection this past weekend, elevating her to our highest "Cookie Queen" status on the site! Hi Perla, I just read this post and noticed you are writing from Dubai. I have just moved here last month. Glad to know a Cookie Connection member living here as well! I am not interested in selling my cookies, but I am interested in every aspect related to cookies. Ha, gotcha! There is no September site artist this month, so you are stuck with some images using my latest back-to-school stencil set ("A+ Teacher") from my Prettier Plaques TM stencil line! A Case Study of Cookie Cost (from Gathering Ingredients to Packing)

Forum: Pricing
Perla Adams
Hello, I only make cookies for hobby, but recently, several people asked me to go into business. I decided to start to calculate the cost of ingredients, packing, and time. Using as a base one recipe of cookies (Gingerbread and Royal Icing), the cost of ingredients for one single iced cookie (2.5 inch diameter) is US$0.23, and packing (cellophane bag and clear individual box) is $0.58. (I live in Dubai, so cost may vary in other locations; this is an expensive city). Now, my concern is with...Read More...

I used to be a sculptor - I've been sculpting under my online alias "Monster Kookies" for more than a decade, but I got burnt out. I don't sculpt as much as I used to, but...Read More...

Many Questions About Freezing Cookie Dough

Kimi Party Majors
I want to save some time and pre-bake and freeze my cut cookies. A few questions: 1. How many days can I leave dough in the fridge before baking? 2. I heard I should cut the dough; then freeze it? 3. How many days can I freeze cut dough? 4. How long do I wait when pulled from freezer before I decorate? 5. How many days should the cookies be good for? Before colors bleed? Thank you very much for your help.Read More...

Hi, all, I just wanted to alert you that the Sixth Annual Go Bo! Foundation Bake Sale is now open for registrations, meaning that if you're interested in donating cookies to the cause, you can now sign up to do so. You can also register to be a volunteer at the event. As a reminder, this event (October 13-15, 2017) raises funds to fuel research into childhood cancer.
