Saturday Spotlight: Top 10 Animal Cookies

Phew! What an afternoon! I spent the vast majority of it trying to rescue a tiny black kitten that was seeking refuge from the cold under my front porch. No amount of coaxing with alluring "coo-coo"s or dishes of milk or smoked salmon (left over from Christmas!) could get him (or her?) out. After calling nearly 20 cat rescue places and mostly hearing "sorry, there's no room at the inn", I was at my wit's end. Finally, St. Louis Feral Cat Outreach (STLFCO) was kind enough to press their volunteer base into action, and two of them came to kitty's - and my (!) - rescue. They managed to dismantle the lattice work on the side of my porch and tunnel into its underbelly to nab the kitty. I am pleased to report that this cutie is now safely in the hands of STLFCO, where they're giving it free medical treatment. I have also found it a cozy home with one of my neighbors provided s/he isn't claimed by any real owner first. (I have a sad feeling s/he was intentionally dumped in the railroad tracks near my house . . .)

As a tribute this brave and adorable little soul, I am hereby dedicating this week's Spotlight to the top ten animal cookies on the site. Any cookie that had at least one animal in it, and was posted to the "Animal Cookies" clip set, was a potential qualifier. The site then did the rest of the work by automatically tabulating your views, likes, and comments over the past seven days to come up with the top-trending animal cookies as of today. Without further ado, here is that equally adorable hot list* . . . naturally, reindeer are well represented, but there are a few other species tossed in too!

Congrats to all of this week's honorees! And a huge shout-out to the very caring folks at STLFCO for taking time out of their holidays to help a neighbor in need. May that be a good lesson for all of us to follow in 2019!

* As a reminder, a word about how the rankings are determined: The rankings are not at all subjective. In fact, they are determined essentially by you, our members, and the activity (number of views, likes, and comments) you've bestowed on each photo. The site uses a top-secret algorithm that weighs these various factors to determine which photos are trending most quickly (i.e., are the "hottest") over specified periods of time. As such, the hot list at the time of this announcement may look a little different a few hours or a day from now as more photos are added to the site.

So that no one has an unfair advantage in making it onto a hot list, the algorithm is secret even to site administrators. Only our platform developers know the code, which has been exhaustively tested by those developers and Cookie Connection staff.

All photos shown here are the courtesy (and copyright) of the designers listed.

To check out our other hot lists, at any time of day, visit our Hot Spot, also found in the site's main navigation line.

Adorable kitty!  I had a similar thing happen under my deck a few years ago.

I'm worried there are more where this guy came from, but no sign of any stray mother cat yet.

Good luck!  In my case it was the neighbor cat.

I've got a post on "Next Door" (the neighborhood app) in their "Lost and Found" area; I just want to check that he doesn't belong to someone else before he gets adopted. Turns out that the neighbor-girl who said she could adopt him can't (her mom vetoed the idea), but we (STLFCO, I should say) found a "no-kill" shelter that will take him until he is adopted. It's amazing how few places here will take in stray cats and not euthanize them . . .  Thank God I found STLFCO, and they were willing to take care of these logistics and this little guy.

Is there a link to all the cookies for today so we can follow their work?

Yeah, the pink links in the photo titles lead to the actual post of that cookie; from there, you can click on the person's name near the image and that will take you to her member profile, where you'll find an option to follow that person.

Kittens do much better than cats when it comes to adoption.  I use to volunteer for the local SPCA.

Poor Kitty, he was so lucky to find a person like you! Almost the same happened to me with birds several times, once I had no chance and after rescuing a small black-cap I had to bring him home because LIPU had no time to take care of him. He lived with us for 11 years 😱 singing all day like a nightyngale! Many congrats to all the featured artists and Happy New Year to all Cookie Connection friends!

The kitten is very, very sweet and I'm glad it's safe now!

Thanks for the opportunity and the honor to be in today's Saturday Spotlight Top 10 with two of my creations!

And also congratulation to everyone!

How great of you to do. With all of the travel between me and my husband, I just don't think we could properly care for a pet at this time. I was tempted though; this little guy was sooooo cute!

Kitty is now in the rescue shelter, waiting to be adopted. The initial prospective adopter bailed because her mom vetoed the idea. I so hope s/he finds a loving home . . .

She looks scared.  I wish I could adopt, but I’m in California and my husband is allergic to cats.

I guess there's no holiday vacation for you Julia!  Thanks for everything you do.  You really are the cat's meow!!

Yeah, Christmas isn't typically much of a holiday for me . . . I've spent the last two weeks trying to regain control of my life, cleaning the house from top to bottom for the first time in a long time, etc. etc. It hasn't been so fun; the cat rescue was actually a bright spot!

These are all such wonderful works of art! Congrats to each of you whose work is being featured. I am beyond surprised and so incredibly honored to be included among such a talented group of cookie artists .

Many thanks to you, Julia, @Julia M. Usher! for all the work you consistently do to make this such an interactive community where we can share so much with each other. Happy New Year to you and your family!

I love, love, love little kitties!! So wonderful of you to rescue this precious little one and take it somewhere that works to find good homes for these little lost furry friends. Don't know what I'd do without the companionship of our kitties ❤️❤️❤️
