BAKRGAL's Day 3 at CookieCon 2015!

Day 3 (Friday) at CookieCon was the day of seminars. There were eight pre-defined groups and seven instructors. A schedule was crafted such that each instructor gave her seminar eight times, with a circulating audience. It was a challenge - I’m sure they must have been pretty exhausted at the end of the day.

In my particular group, our schedule was structured as follows:
  • Mallory Mae Chiavacci (ButterWinks), discussing the process of going from order to inspiration to her very detailed finished products.
  • Susan Carberry (The Cake Cottage), demonstrating how to make 3-D cookies.
  • Monica Holbert (Cookie Cowgirl), talking about how to simplify complex ideas in order to make projects easier to tackle, without sacrificing style and originality.
  • Dotty Raleigh (Sugar Dot Cookies), discussing her experience setting up her business in a commercial kitchen, and how she runs her thriving business on a day-to-day basis.
  • Nadia Kalinichenko (My Little Bakery), creator of beautifully detailed lacework cookies, showing us how she does it!
  • Laurie Thompson and Jeanette Durham (SugarBliss Cookies), airbrushers extraordinaire, discussing and demonstrating all of their tips and tricks.
  • Bridget Edwards (Bake at 350), talking about using social media to promote your business, blogging, and also some very useful photography tips.

I learned a lot and want to go home and try so many things. The classes were all pretty great. Not a lot of pics, however, so I thought I’d share just a small selection of things from the Sugar Show that caught my eye. Voting is happening now, and winners will be announced tomorrow.

In addition, the mystery shape cookie will be revealed, and people will have Saturday to decorate and submit that cookie to the Sugar Show. The excitement builds!

[EDITOR'S NOTE: All Sugar Show entries are submitted anonymously, so the creators won't be known until the big reveal on Saturday. Our apologies for not being able to attach most of the extraordinary cookies below to their rightful creators! But I bet they'll bask in due glory on Saturday! One exception: The second image of the birds on black is by My Little Bakery. Instructors are also asked to submit cookies, though they are not eligible for prizes.]

Barb Florin, aka BAKRGALhas been interested in both baking and art since she can remember. Barb studied art in college, later graduated from pastry school in San Francisco, and, between jobs in corporate America, dabbled in her own baking business. However, it was only within the last few years that she became involved with decorated cookies. In addition to finally finding a way to combine her art and baking interests in one medium, she's met so many members of the cookie community who share a philosophy of creativity, inspiration, and generosity. In Barb's words: "It’s really a fun and fulfilling thing to be a part of!" While at CookieCon: Barb will be doing a "Day in the Life of Barb" series of blog posts that track her CookieCon fun, starting with the highlights of her pre-CookieCon course with Team Cookie and culminating with a recap of the Sugar Show.
