Happy 1st Birthday Giveaway!

It's hard to pinpoint the exact birthday of this (my beloved) site. It launched "softly" into cyberspace in Spring 2013 with different people getting introduced to it at various stages of development.

About a month before I announced its birth on Facebook, a small cadre* of members were already testing the site's various features and functionality while I was furiously adding content so it wouldn't be naked upon official arrival. (Naked might be normal for most babies, but it wasn't acceptable for this one!) A month or so before that, the lovely Jaci Baynes Harper of Ali's Sweet Tooth was the one who gave me the idea and encouragement to start this community. It took some coaxing, but she eventually convinced me!  She looked at early versions of the site, provided input on possible names, and also joined the team doing the early testing. Around this same time, Elizabeth Watt of Pretty Sweet Designs stepped in to offer advice on my color and font choices and to work on banners, backgrounds, and other necessary graphics. I am deeply indebted to all of these people; for without them, Cookie Connection would have never come into being.

While the history is a little fuzzy, I do know this: it was a quick gestation period (no more than two months). Testing on the site was still underway at the end of May and into early June 2013, and one of my first official welcome posts on the site was dated June 7.

That said, I'm splitting the difference and declaring June 1, 2013 as Cookie Connection's official birthday! I hope you'll celebrate with me by taking part in this giveaway!

(Another great graphic by Pretty Sweet Designs, BTW!)

In one short year, we've grown to over 3,700 members (from nearly 50 countries)! We've brought on six (now five) incredible contributors, and we're experiencing an average of about 1.4 million views per month. What's more, some amazing sponsors, including Designer Stencils, Fancy Flours, BRP Box Shop, The Classic Cookie Cutter, and Craftsy, have consistently supported us along the way.

But more important than any of these numbers are the warmth, energy, and wonderful artistry that members of this community share so generously with one another each day. It's been immensely gratifying to see the world of cookie decorating come closer together and to get to know many of you through your cookies and comments on this site. Thank you, everyone, for making this year one of the most rewarding ones that my sieve-like brain can remember!  I look forward to many more years of cookie fun together!

Enough waxing poetic about the site's birthday . . . about that giveaway!

What's Up For Grabs

We would like to see more natural colored cookies! Of course that is something the "Natural Color Guy" would say!  How about a cookie decorating contest with cookies made with TruColorNatural Colors and color sets donated to Cookie Con for prizes!  We really would like to see that!

Firstly a very Happy Birthday. Julia , what more can I say then "Thank You".

I would love to see the chat get off the ground this year and have more people see it as a check in point to CC. With one "Good morning" or "Hello" there are tens of fellow cookiers out there that we could reach at any given time "LIVE"; emergencies, recipes, advice or friendship. That would be something I would like to see evolve on this site.

     So Happy Birthday CC!

OH, and I would love to see you, Julia throw in a "cookie" as a prize. That is something I would also love to have and cherish!

More information on the pros and cons of owning a store front from people who have failed and succeeded by expanding out of their home.   Tips for advertising and networking for our business is also very handy info.

Dear Julia and other team members, thank you so much for starting the CookieConnection!! I think this community has done an excellent job in its first year!! In the coming year, I'd love to see more how-to cookie decoration tutorials, experience sharing in terms of "starting your own cookie business" and hope the "Cookier Close-Up" will bring us more fun & informative interviews Thanks again<3

First off, I would like to wish Cookie Connection a very happy 1st birthday. I would like to see more tutorials on the site, and also tips and tricks. Tips and/or tricks to solving some of the nightmare cookiers face when decorating. Like a tip/trick to avoid color bleeding, etc. Or what to do after color starts bleeding. Again, happy birthday!!

Feliz Cumpleaños CC!!!

Me gustaria saber el tamaño de la galleta, el color que usan...

El resto de la pagina esta perfecta para mi.

Gracias por crear una pagina donde estamos reunidas personas del todo el mundo.

Happy Birthday CC!

I would like to know the size of the cookie, using the color ...

The rest of the page is perfect for me.

Thank you for creating a page where people are gathered all over the world.

Happy Birthday!  I would love to be able to view video tutorials on how to do all the different techniques and effects that the decorators are so creatively applying to these beautiful cookies. They are such masterpieces!  I want to be able to create them as well!

A very happy 1st birthday to cookie connection. I absolutely love your work julia. For the second year of cookie connection, I'd love to maybe have meet-up's between members, like maybe a city-wise plan to start off with so that we get to meet fellow cookiers, and also have more tutorials as we can never have enough of your work

I agree with everyone saying more tutorials I love learning new techniques! Also I like the idea of having challenges where an idea for a cookie is shared and people show what they made from the idea.

Hi, Peggy, Rebecca Weld of The Cookie Architect is conducting monthly challenges (of the very sort you describe) here on the site (just look under the blog for the name of her column, Practice Bakes Perfect). Her first challenge is concluding tomorrow and we'll get the second one announced soon after the recap of the first is posted. I hope you enjoy them! ~JMU

Happy 1st Birthday - thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I would love to see more tutorials (either youtube or step by step) and tips on how to make "perfect" cookies/biscuits. Some recipes would also be great. Your biscuits/cookies are amazing and inspire us all.

I would love to see more on creating end. Like how do you come up with the ideas and then make them into cookies. Also recipes and how to adapt some of them, like how to make a plain sugar cookie into a great sugar cookie.

♫ ♫" HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU ♫ ♫" ♫ ♫" HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU ♫ ♫" ♫ ♫" HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR Cookie Connection  ♫ ♫" ♫ ♫" HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU ♫ ♫"

I love the chats with other cookiers and would really like to see more tutorials. I really like the challenges and would love to see them once a month.

Thought you would want to know: the Practice Bakes Perfect challenges are monthly. Rebecca already has the next one lined up; we're just waiting to post the results of the first one on June 7. ~JMU

Lots of happiness for Julia page. The truth is that I have little to say, the OAR seems perfect and I love watching the cookies as nice people do. I'm loving the tutorials are perfect for people who can not attend courses. Now for the two years. Congratulations!

Happy Birthday!  I love this site. I am a newbie so I like some ideas catering toward basic problem solving ie...when icing takes forever to dry etc... I love the intricate cookies but feel they are beyond my capabilities at this point. I will get there though .

I would love to see more of the same!! Keep it coming I say!
I love Cookie Connection... I am a bit of a Cookie Connection nerd, its one of the first sites I look at in the morning and one of the last I look at, at night! I love it!

Thank you for COOKIE CONNECTION! I have learned so much and have enjoyed looking at all the cookies . I would love to see more recipes and more tutorials . But I love it anyway! Thank you for all that you do!

Congratulations!  It's hard to want more, this site is so complete and full of information, creativity and ideas.  I love that you can find answers to your questions.  I like how people all world is sharing.
1-More tutorials.

2- Creative uses for cutters

3- Original and creative new ideas for cookies like the 3D and the molded.  I believe this is a new tred in cookies.

4- Small changes in recipes so you can have other cookie flavors of your favorite cookie récipe. (like in your books)

Hi Julia! Man that was a fast year! Congrats on your milestone! I would like to see a recipe section, tried and true recipes, not just ones pulled off of the internet, cause let me tell you some are hits and some are misses...thank you for a chance to snag this wonderful prize package...m

Hard to believe it's only a year.  Appreciate the site and inspiration.  I'd like a very short and sweet "here's the problem [photo] and here's how I solved it.  Text and images, not video.

Love the site! I am no where near the talent on this site but I hope to be someday! Any additional help with tutorials etc would be amazing for me and all the others that aspire to be making amazing cookies as well! Thanks for sharing your site with all of us!!

**************HAPPY BIRTHDAY, COOKIE CONNECTION*********************

  • I would love to see more collaborative projects; I would like to see the use of one cookie cutter done with different designs by a group (one cookie cutter, see what you can create out of it in a different design).
  • I would love to partake in doing cookie-scapes with other cookiers by taking a picture and having everyone do their take on the picture via cookie of the picture (without using their kopykake)
  • Less KopyKaked Designs...we can all create cookies with our KKs but let's see what you can do without one...solutions for people without a KK (maybe how to's for people without one on how to get a beautiful design on a cookie)

I am a newbie to cookie decorating and I am so happy I found this community.  When I have a problem, I am sure I will be able to find a solution and help to solve the issue.  I also get so many ideas.  I am in awe of the works of edible art displayed here.  Thank you Julia & Cookie Connection!

Happy birthday, Cookie Connection!  It would be amazing to see more of an ability to search individual techniques for when I'm stuck on a certain part of a design.  For instance, while working on graduation cookies I wanted to find several options for wet on wet backgrounds.  Another time, I was looking for better ways to do a monogram.

Maybe someone else already knows how to do this, but I would like to be able to flip through photos quickly and like or comment at the same time.

Thank you for Cookie Connection!  It's great!!!

Hi, there are ways to do this already. Not sure if you've tried them and found them not so useful, or haven't tried them. But would love to know either way. Methods are:

1. Go to site search (upper left of site) and enter technique keywords; then select "Photos" to the left (so you are just searching photos and not the whole site). This should pull up any image tagged with those keywords.

2. Alternatively, go to "Clips" in the main navigation line and then select "All Sets" in that dropdown menu. Click the toggle in the upper right of that page to view all clip sets on the site alphabetically. Then click on the technique clip set that best matches what you're looking for. All of the photos on the site that have been put in that technique clip set will pop up.

Please remember, that our classifications/searches will be better and more powerful only if people fully catalog their own photos. When they don't, then their photos are not searchable. Our site moderators cannot tag all of the many photos that hit the site each day; it's just not humanly possible or the best use of our time. ~JMU

Happy Birthday! Thanks for running such a wonderful site - it's one of my favourite go to places everyday.

I would like to see some cookie recipes, maybe with the option to bookmark them in a recipe folder.

Thanks again to you Julia, and all the great contributors that make this site so very special.

Happy Birthday Cookie Connection!  I think I actually started looking at your site right around the time it came online and I can't believe that it is only one year old.  The site was so professional looking and helpful.  Congratulations!!  Here is to many years of continued success!

Since I have been a lurker on the site, and haven't built up the nerve to start decorating yet.  I am artistically challenged, and have a hard time figuring out where to start.  I can't see the finished product.  I started out decorating cakes (for fun and my grandson only), even with the cakes I would have to start weeks in advance to figure out what to do.  I think my wish for the site would be tutorials, whether written with photos or video, on how to decide where to start, where do you start when you want to place a certain object in order for it to fit correctly, what do you do next. How do you know what icing needs to be piped first. I have watched tons of tutorials, they are AMAZING from amazing cookie artists and I thank them all for doing these.  But for this girl who tend to over think things - am I making it harder than it has to be?  Very possibly.

Thanks Cookie Connection! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Happy Birthday, I love this site! Congratulations!

What I'd like to see...more tutorials, especially at an advanced level. Also video demonstrations, and categorizing all tutorials by skill level.

Best prize though would be one of your cookies!!!

More contributors/ blog posts! I would also love to see more chats and hopefully those will include more specific questions relevant to the particular decorator, rather than very general, basic questions about decorating.

Happy 1st birthday Cookie Connection.

I'd love to see chat forums where you can post questions on a particular cookie dilemma (a sort of cookie clinic) and have a panel of experts give their thoughts as well as the rest of us diving in with our 2 cents

I love the blog posts, finding out more about my cookie heroes

and love seeing the tutorials.

Just more!more!more! of the same goodstuff please.

Congratulations on making it to your first year, what an accomplishment. I love this site for many reasons, such an inspiration. For me, I'd love to see video tutorials and include some on airbrushing. I would also love to meet up with local cookiers (can't always get to the out-of-state places) so maybe a map or something showing where people are at so it's easy to find them. It's amazing to me how many cookiers there are!!

Happy Birthday Cookie Connection!  This site has been such an inspiration to me!  For the upcoming year, I would love to see something in the monochromatic realm- like maybe a challenge or a clipset.  Sometimes I get so bogged down in multiple colors that it would be nice to be inspired by a few shades of the same color.

I have over 2400 email "clips" from this site alone!

I'd like bigger images in each email "clip" (instead of having to open up each one.)

Happy Birthday Cookie Connection!

Hi, I might be able to solve this one for you already. One option is to view the clips in slide show mode on the site; they will reveal in very large size that way without having to open up each one. There's a link the upper left of the Clips page to view in this mode. ~JMU

I would love to see more tutorials. I would also like to see "my favorite tips or secrets" done by well known or expert decorators. There is always something new to add to one's repertoire!

Happy Birthday!!

I would love a tab for vendor contacts.  A place for members to quickly click on links when needing to make a purchase. Plus members could comment if they have experienced great (or not so great) customer service.

Happy Birthday Cookie Connection!

I am a newbie here and to the cookie decorating world. I am fast becoming a cookie cutter addict. I would like to see (with pictures) creative ways to use cutters. Also, problem solving....is the cookie I just ruined salvageable? Tips & secrets! Also, maybe an actual "connection" page where members can see where other members live (city) and can get together if they find someone near them.

Love the site Julia, congratulations on it's success.

Happy Birthday!!!!!

As I am seeing more unique cookie decorating techniques, I think there needs to be a lot more video tutorials on how to do various techniques to create various looks.  A tab/section for just video tutorials on decorating cookie techniques would be awesome as "the place to go to" for all cookie decorators.

Hi, just so you know: there is already a tab/section just for video tutorials. It's under Clips/then Videos. There are currently 47 videos in it: http://cookieconnection.juliau...clipsTab=false-VIDEO. The issue is: right now I am pretty much the only one adding video content (I post about one a week), but any member can! I encourage others to add their video content at any time! ~JMU

Congratulations and thank you for your continued inspiration.  I'd like to see more project ideas which can be finished and presented in a shorter time frame.  I L O V E your design ideas, but realistically, unless I have 3-4 uninterrupted days without kids, they are not feasible. AMAZING -Just not do-able.

Happy Birthday, Cookie Connection! I am so glad I found this site. I love the ideas posted already. I'd like to see myself participate more and take advantage of all the knowledge housed here. There's so many talented people to meet!

Hi!  I love this site!

I would like to see, if possible, information regarding Cottage Food Laws by state, and guidelines for people who run businesses out of their homes. I find that some people abide by the laws, but others don't and I'm sure it's mostly out of ignorance of the laws.

Additionally, any helpful information/consolidation on pricing by location.  I find some of my competitors are woefully undercharging for their product, which actually hurts everyone.

Thanks so much!

Happy Birthday Cookie Connection!! I love this site. It's my first stop in the mornings when I sit down at the computer with my cup of tea. I love to see what everyone has been working on.
I would also love to see more tutorials. And challenges such as the practice bakes perfect challenge. Also some sort of virtual workshop would be neat.

I cannot adequately convey how much this site means to me. With only a few months of cookie decorating under my belt, I value its resources and inspiration each and every day.

In the future, I'd like to see more blog posts having to do with the business side of things: tips on packaging and shipping, licensing and laws, streamlining costs. I'd also love a section for local meetups. It would be great to meet my fellow cookiers in person.

Thanks again!

First off, a big thank you and congratulations to those who have made this website possible.  I am very grateful to be a member of this site and freely enjoy the labor of so many.  I would like to see more tips on starting a business, pricing items and cookie packaging ideas.  I also enjoy tutorials of all kinds. This is a wonderful site!

I would love to see more instructions on the needlepoint icing...AND... As long as I'm being asked.....

I'd love to see MY name picked as the winner of these fantastic prizes!!

Thanks

Ansa

congrats on one year!! while I love the tutorials (and the ones on youtube!) It would be cool to see more of these from other people too. And to know of more shows happening out and about. I'm in Toronto, Canada so dont hear of any events around here but would love to know of other people that are interested in exchanging ideas/tips and where to purchase items locally.

More tutorials please!!!

Also I was wondering if for each clip posting there could be more pictures loaded just to that clip, because I'd love to see all the details from different angles!

Also can we find a way to the more people on chat?

Happy 1st birthday!

Happy birthday cookie connection!!

i would love to see more video tutorials especially in areas where more detailed piping work is involved.

I'm excited about the giveaway and I hope to win. I've never won any giveaway before. Hah!

Happy 1st birthday Cookie Connection I too would love to see more demo videos and  tutorials. There are many places to go on the Internet for basic RI tutorials, but I would love to see some more challenging subject matter. Maybe the top "liked" cookie of the week could be invited to be a guest "How'd you do that?" contributor.

I would also like to see a "What's new in the world of cookies" section that showcases new products, websites, techniques, etc.

I met you at the first cookiecon and you are very nice, helpful and an amazing decorator.  I love Cookie Connection and thank you for creating it.  I would like to see more tutorials on decorating techniques.

Happy Birthday! I'd love to see an "inspired by" forum...where people can post a cookie they've made, and where the inspiration came from...whether that came from another cookie, a picture, fabric or whatever! i love to see how these creative minds work!

Hi Julia! Happy 1st Birthday to Cookie Connection! I really enjoy the time, I spend here, I enjoy the amazing cookie art and learn so much!

I would love to see more tutorials, video tutorials, contributors and blog post, and some type of translation tool, easily accessible in the comment area. It would be also be great, if in the comment area, we could click on the likes in parentheses, for example (4 Likes) and see the names of those who liked the comment. Can't say enough about all of the great features, you already have here on Cookie Connection, the wonderful contributors, and very talented members who share their beautiful cookie creations for everyone to enjoy! And great giveaways! Thank you for all you do, to keep Cookie Connection a positive, and fun place, that encourages the art of cookie decorating in so many creative and ways! And for always looking for ways to make Cookie Connection even better than it already is!

Thanks, Dana, for all of the great input. Not sure if you know, but Google Translate is already installed on the site. You can access it from the left of the home page or at the very bottom of every page on the site. Just select a language and it translates everything on the site, including comments. I'm sure the translations won't be the best, but it should be a good start for anyone struggling with language differences. ~JMU

Happy Birthday Cookie Connection! I just have loved being a part of this group and have "met" some amazingly talented and inspiring individuals <3 I have loved the site so far I would love to see ideas on how you can do multiple uses for cutters we may already have. I would also be interested in seeing gatherings of cookie connection members so we could get to know one another better

Hmmmm...admittedly I'm not as well versed on this site as I should be.  It seems pretty overwhelming when I do hunt around on here.  I just need to spend more time here -- so you're all good.  It's me.  THANK YOU!!!  I adore your work!

Happy Birthday and thank you for this fabulous site!  I would love to see more:

1. recipes

2. tutorials

3. different uses for cutters - I am very challenged when it comes to thinking 'outside' a cutter and it really helps me to see how others have used them.

Thanks again because this site is a cookie decorator's paradise

Happy Birthday Cookie. Connection! WOW, time has flown by! I stumbled across your site in the earliest stages in June 2013. Amazing how it has grown! You've done a great job!

i would love to have more opportunities in different locations throughout the US to gather with other cookie fanatics. Perhaps even to organize local "support groups" within states so that we could get to know one another and possibly host smaller gatherings.

Happy Birthday!  As many folks have mentioned, more tutorials and "how-tos" would be great.  And how about a classified ad section where people could post things such as equipment, duplicate cutters, etc.?

Just an FYI: we already have a forum called "Cookie Swap" which is designed to be a classified ad section in effect - a place to post about cookie things that one might want to give away, trade, or sell. Check it out; I'd love for people to start posting there. ~ JMU  http://cookieconnection.juliau...om/forum/cookie-swap

I would love to see more recipes for cookie dough--I have a few go to ones (basic sugar cookie, chocolate, chocolate chip, pumpkin-spice cookies) but I love new ideas--I have a key-lime-coconut recipe that rocks and an espresso-chip recipe that people seem to enjoy! Would love some new, clever ideas to mix things up!

I would like to see features about color theory and color mixing...hint, hint  It is a helpful tool for both beginners and advanced decorators.

Happy Birthday Cookie Connection!!!

You should contact me about the possibility of writing about color theory for the site. I'm always interested in new ideas!  ~JMU
