Happy 1st Birthday Giveaway!

It's hard to pinpoint the exact birthday of this (my beloved) site. It launched "softly" into cyberspace in Spring 2013 with different people getting introduced to it at various stages of development.

About a month before I announced its birth on Facebook, a small cadre* of members were already testing the site's various features and functionality while I was furiously adding content so it wouldn't be naked upon official arrival. (Naked might be normal for most babies, but it wasn't acceptable for this one!) A month or so before that, the lovely Jaci Baynes Harper of Ali's Sweet Tooth was the one who gave me the idea and encouragement to start this community. It took some coaxing, but she eventually convinced me!  She looked at early versions of the site, provided input on possible names, and also joined the team doing the early testing. Around this same time, Elizabeth Watt of Pretty Sweet Designs stepped in to offer advice on my color and font choices and to work on banners, backgrounds, and other necessary graphics. I am deeply indebted to all of these people; for without them, Cookie Connection would have never come into being.

While the history is a little fuzzy, I do know this: it was a quick gestation period (no more than two months). Testing on the site was still underway at the end of May and into early June 2013, and one of my first official welcome posts on the site was dated June 7.

That said, I'm splitting the difference and declaring June 1, 2013 as Cookie Connection's official birthday! I hope you'll celebrate with me by taking part in this giveaway!

(Another great graphic by Pretty Sweet Designs, BTW!)

In one short year, we've grown to over 3,700 members (from nearly 50 countries)! We've brought on six (now five) incredible contributors, and we're experiencing an average of about 1.4 million views per month. What's more, some amazing sponsors, including Designer Stencils, Fancy Flours, BRP Box Shop, The Classic Cookie Cutter, and Craftsy, have consistently supported us along the way.

But more important than any of these numbers are the warmth, energy, and wonderful artistry that members of this community share so generously with one another each day. It's been immensely gratifying to see the world of cookie decorating come closer together and to get to know many of you through your cookies and comments on this site. Thank you, everyone, for making this year one of the most rewarding ones that my sieve-like brain can remember!  I look forward to many more years of cookie fun together!

Enough waxing poetic about the site's birthday . . . about that giveaway!

What's Up For Grabs

We've got three great prizes, all for one winner:

1. First, a Kalorik volumetric kitchen scale (retail value: $50), a never-used gift to me from sponsors of the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show. It automatically converts various things from grams/ounces to cups to take the guesswork out of your royal icing mixing!

2. Second, another lovely custom-embroidered Cookie Connection apron straight off the plane from Italy, this time in blue (retail value: $40).

Happy Birthday! I'd love to see an "inspired by" forum...where people can post a cookie they've made, and where the inspiration came from...whether that came from another cookie, a picture, fabric or whatever! i love to see how these creative minds work!

Happy Birthday!!

I would love a tab for vendor contacts.  A place for members to quickly click on links when needing to make a purchase. Plus members could comment if they have experienced great (or not so great) customer service.

**************HAPPY BIRTHDAY, COOKIE CONNECTION*********************

  • I would love to see more collaborative projects; I would like to see the use of one cookie cutter done with different designs by a group (one cookie cutter, see what you can create out of it in a different design).
  • I would love to partake in doing cookie-scapes with other cookiers by taking a picture and having everyone do their take on the picture via cookie of the picture (without using their kopykake)
  • Less KopyKaked Designs...we can all create cookies with our KKs but let's see what you can do without one...solutions for people without a KK (maybe how to's for people without one on how to get a beautiful design on a cookie)

More information on the pros and cons of owning a store front from people who have failed and succeeded by expanding out of their home.   Tips for advertising and networking for our business is also very handy info.

Rough Translation:

To be noted that only yesterday I discovered this site and I am grateful because I can learn many things from people professional
My request is to understand through video tutorials for those approaching or just to decorate cookies, what are the steps to follow to learn how to decorate a path starting with the type, beginner, intermediate and advanced .... a bit like the location of the school you begin with the basics and then move to higher levels ........ thanks ..... PS I am thrilled when I can see you in Italy

What to add more? Maybe a Julia's clone. I don't know how you can manage, this site, your Facebook page, your You tubes tutorials, your courses here and there over the ocean, and... and... and... Maybe if your clone could have a section on new products with appreciation and comments on the usefullness of the product. I am always ready to add more products if they help me.

Finallly let me add my congrats for this first year. I like so much, at the end of day, while drinking my  cup of tea, looking to the various sections of your site. I can then go to bed with nice images in my mind. Thank for sharing.

A clone would be good!  ~JMU

P.S. Note that my question was "What would you like to see in the second year on Cookie Connection?", which could have been interpreted "what more" or "what less" or anything in between! But the prevailing sentiment seems to be more. Better get the clone factory in high production mode!

I dont know why my comment is above yours.
I just want to congratulate you for this amazing first year.
what I expect from you is what you are just doing: your selfless attitude to share promptly all the secrets you know with us. It really makes a difference. Thank you so much.

Thanks so much, Fiorella!  Regarding your commenting question: It's because you clicked on the dialogue symbol (speech balloon) in the bottom right of my post, which automatically copies the whole post that you clicked on into your comment. To comment on a post, simply scroll to the end of the post and click on the button in the center labelled "Post Comment". The only time I use the dialog symbol is typically when commenting on someone else's comment on another blog post, as a way to tag that commenter. And only when that comment is short. I've deleted the repeat of my post here, BTW, so people don't have to scroll past it again.  ~JMU

Happy Birthday Cookie Connection!!!!! I have always loved to bake cookies. When I found this I was in heaven. I didn't realize that so many people baked cookies. All the photo's and the imaginations of all the cookie decorators is a blessing. Thank you Julia for putting us all together!  You are AWESOME!!!!!

First of all HAPPY BIRTHDAY Cookie Connection!!!! ... U're really 'connecting' us where stay at different continents. I just joint this community a view hours ago, even I'seen Julia tutorial before. I am a newbie to cookie decorating and when I see Julia video tutorial, it's makes me more love & feel that I should make something Beautiful as Julia's someday. The last but not least Thank U for accepting me in this community & I'll love to learn more tutorial&ideas from Cookie Connection

Happy 1st Birthday!  I'm a newbie to the site, but love what I've seen already. I would love to see/know some of the following:
1) how many design uses for 1 cookie cutter ( with pictures of course) sometimes I can't figure out what the cookie cutter original shape was
2) How'd You Do That / How to Area: with other pro and Up & Coming pro cookieologists able to add their ideas, experiences, failures, & recoveries
3) I'd like to know how to do color marbling, or even kinda like tie dying but within one cookie base color - not multiple separate colors
4) I second or third the idea of having a Favorite Tips & Secrets area or tab - maybe even run it as a contest to get the content submitted for it
5) cookie basics area - a) is it ok to freeze cookies & still have them be "fresh" for an order once thawed & decorated, b) how many days is considered "fresh" if a cookie has to dry for 24+ hours to complete a design, c) how many days uncovered/ drying etc. & then packaged & sent should a cookie with RI last - and still be considered fresh, d) should dried/completed cookies be packaged airtight, stored airtight, etc.

Thanks for the great gathering of great cookie minds!!

I would love to see an East Coast Cookie Con, or smaller gatherings of cookiers.

I'm fairly new to this site, but I've learned so much in the time I've been here. Congratulations on your anniversary!

More tutorials please!!!

Also I was wondering if for each clip posting there could be more pictures loaded just to that clip, because I'd love to see all the details from different angles!

Also can we find a way to the more people on chat?

Happy 1st birthday!

I have over 2400 email "clips" from this site alone!

I'd like bigger images in each email "clip" (instead of having to open up each one.)

Happy Birthday Cookie Connection!

Hi, I might be able to solve this one for you already. One option is to view the clips in slide show mode on the site; they will reveal in very large size that way without having to open up each one. There's a link the upper left of the Clips page to view in this mode. ~JMU

Happy birthday, Cookie Connection!  It would be amazing to see more of an ability to search individual techniques for when I'm stuck on a certain part of a design.  For instance, while working on graduation cookies I wanted to find several options for wet on wet backgrounds.  Another time, I was looking for better ways to do a monogram.

Maybe someone else already knows how to do this, but I would like to be able to flip through photos quickly and like or comment at the same time.

Thank you for Cookie Connection!  It's great!!!

Hi, there are ways to do this already. Not sure if you've tried them and found them not so useful, or haven't tried them. But would love to know either way. Methods are:

1. Go to site search (upper left of site) and enter technique keywords; then select "Photos" to the left (so you are just searching photos and not the whole site). This should pull up any image tagged with those keywords.

2. Alternatively, go to "Clips" in the main navigation line and then select "All Sets" in that dropdown menu. Click the toggle in the upper right of that page to view all clip sets on the site alphabetically. Then click on the technique clip set that best matches what you're looking for. All of the photos on the site that have been put in that technique clip set will pop up.

Please remember, that our classifications/searches will be better and more powerful only if people fully catalog their own photos. When they don't, then their photos are not searchable. Our site moderators cannot tag all of the many photos that hit the site each day; it's just not humanly possible or the best use of our time. ~JMU

Thank you for COOKIE CONNECTION! I have learned so much and have enjoyed looking at all the cookies . I would love to see more recipes and more tutorials . But I love it anyway! Thank you for all that you do!

I would love to see more of the same!! Keep it coming I say!
I love Cookie Connection... I am a bit of a Cookie Connection nerd, its one of the first sites I look at in the morning and one of the last I look at, at night! I love it!

I would love to see more on creating end. Like how do you come up with the ideas and then make them into cookies. Also recipes and how to adapt some of them, like how to make a plain sugar cookie into a great sugar cookie.

♫ ♫" HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU ♫ ♫" ♫ ♫" HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU ♫ ♫" ♫ ♫" HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR Cookie Connection  ♫ ♫" ♫ ♫" HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU ♫ ♫"

I agree with everyone saying more tutorials I love learning new techniques! Also I like the idea of having challenges where an idea for a cookie is shared and people show what they made from the idea.

Hi, Peggy, Rebecca Weld of The Cookie Architect is conducting monthly challenges (of the very sort you describe) here on the site (just look under the blog for the name of her column, Practice Bakes Perfect). Her first challenge is concluding tomorrow and we'll get the second one announced soon after the recap of the first is posted. I hope you enjoy them! ~JMU

We would like to see more natural colored cookies! Of course that is something the "Natural Color Guy" would say!  How about a cookie decorating contest with cookies made with TruColorNatural Colors and color sets donated to Cookie Con for prizes!  We really would like to see that!

Thanks to everyone for participating, especially for sharing your thoughtful feedback! Read all about how we're acting on your advice here.

I love the tutorials.  I would like to see a tutorial using a new set of cutters, any set.  Maybe like the one being given away.  I see a new cutter and just don't know what to do with it.

I think tutorials are a big thing. Especially from individuals who aren't overly recognized in the community (i.e. not a big name) but have some really fantastic pieces of work and interesting ideas. I'd like to hear from them!

What an amazing accomplishment this site has been! Congratulations on its anniversary! I enjoy everything that the site has to offer! Something that might be really beneficial to have is a trouble-shooting hotline so if we cookiers ever run into trouble while baking/decorating someone is "on-call" to help out and turn a possible disaster into a success.

Hi, thanks! We sort of have an area for this already. We have a chat room that's open 24/7 (accessible from the right of the home page and under "Chats" in the main navigation line) where people can post anything (same is true of the "HELP NEEDED STAT" forums that we have). I get alerted when anything posts to these areas, but I think the challenge is getting people to use these spaces. ~JMU
