These are absolutely STUNNING! All of the tiny details and the paint blending are wonderful. These are so darn realistic! (And of course, my favorite theme ever!) Really well done!

My first entry for the "painting" challenge - I plan on trying for a second if I find the time! I used regular royal icing, with no corn syrup or other additive, and piped individual feathers on the birds, before painting them with Wilton gel colors diluted with vodka (42°). (I will add a picture of the unpainted iced cookies when I manage to transfer them from my phone.) My icing came out a little weird for no identifiable reason, and dried slightly lumpy ; I had initially planned on six birds but two of then pitted so badly when I tried to paint them that I had to give up on them. A further two (the two sitting birds) became slightly porous with the vodka-paint, which was an annoyance, but isn't very noticeable on the cookies, and not at all on the picture.

I found painting the birds time-consuming but not very difficult. I am actuallly not a fan of painted cookies - I like royal icing work, and to me, painting a cookie seems both a little like "cheating", and a little pointless, since you could do the exact same thing (and probably better) on paper. But that's just a matter of personal preference!
