This is a videorecap of my first tutorial of this year (Jan 2019), here on Cookie Connectionfeaturing the โ€œFelt Techniqueโ€. I used colored icing sugar -aka confectioner's or powdered sugar- for the felt effect. But right before coating the cookie with sugar, I used a paint brush to apply random dabs of flooding-consistency royal icing on the dried royal icing surface, to give a texture. The said texture underneath the coating of sugar gives the felt look. This is meant to be a complement of the step by step tutorial that you can find here:

Iโ€™m having trouble coloring my icing sugar...my gel food coloring is sticking to the inside of the bag.  Iโ€™ve tried adding more coloring and massaging.  Any ideas?  Just keep working it?  Beautiful technique!

Hi Emily! I started with a drop of color x 1spoon of sugar. You really need a small amount of color and I kept massaging until all the color was absorbed by the sugar. You wouldnโ€™t want to add too much color because otherwise your sugar will become pasty. If this happens add sugar and keep massaging the bag. It takes a bit of patience. If you read my tutorial you will notice that I made a lot of red sugar compared to the grey one. It is because I wasnโ€™t patient enough and added too much color and I had to add more sugar to absorb it. Eventually the red color developed and became too dark so I added more sugar to make it lighter. You donโ€™t need so much tinted sugar, just a layer to cover the surface and make it look wooly/felty. Then you need to shake the cookie. A spoon of sugar will go for many cookies.
