I actually avoided doing this challenge for a while because I get freaked out by a white canvas. I like things that are much more structured, so while chatting with a friend, we were discussing what someone with no drawing skill could do: Pollock or Mondrian homages? I decided to go for something that speaks to me: barn quilts. I come from NC, my father from a family farm, and while his family didn't have one on their barn, I love seeing them on others. Plus, I quilt.

I loved the distressed look of Tina at Sugar Wishes's distressed base, so I tried to do something similar. Because I was trying to make smaller planks, I used my turkey trusser to etch boards and then used the trusser and a stumpy hard bristled brush to distress. I wish I had let it dry more between coats/scraping.

The textured effect was really successful! I can see it working well for simulating brick too. (I just finished a brick patio cookie, and could have used the approach there!)

This was a great theme for you! I really like how your distressed barn wood came out, and I agree with Julia that your technique could be used in a lot of other contexts, and not just the side of a barn! After seeing your quilt cookies, I want to see some of your real quilts!
