Yes, I know, right! But the typical stitches used for felt crafts help to trick the eye! It is crucial to use icing sugar (aka confetctioner’s sugar/ powder sugar/zucchero a velo) because it gives a matt finish and it is crucial to apply random dabs of flooding-consistency royal icing to give some underlying texture because felt isn't as smooth as velvet or suede. The “felt effect” is a combination of these three factors.
