Fun music box  (Why fun?  You will see)

musicbox1musicbox2

Photos from different angles:   Stones, log, monkeys and marble like floor are fondant

MANDRILL

If you pull and push the lock, the mandrill moves.   OMG this mandrill is pushing the cage and the cage has a crack!  Be careful, people.

mandril4mandril5

How?

mandril

White base is fondant attached to cookie, mandrills are icing.

mandrill3mandrill2

This is the idea, the cage is paper to show you how

2 mandrills are made every other pole but they do not overlap each other so if you pull the lock the picture changes.

If you remove the lid and turn the rod, monkeys come out

pandabear Not, yet

O.K. Here we go!  OMG this is the first time for me to upload videos, this is wrong side...? my computer shows black bars on each side of this video but not my iPhone and iPad.

(I hope you are enjoying my Fun Music Box now)

inside

This is the inside of the box (Wow! not neat…. )

elephant

Turning the rod, the elephant tries to get bananas but they move

Pinwheel also moves.  Pinwheel is waferpaper  Meerkats are looking at pinwheel.  I hope they don't get dizziness.

meerkat

(are you also looking at the pinwheel?  Yay!)

A lot of work and struggling were needed for me.  You know why?  Those monkeys that don't sit still!  On the lid, one monkey throws bananas many times, the other don't stop jumping from the rock, and those that come out from the box, they like falling down.   They injured many times and I was an only doctor.  I am not that patient, they are patients!

P.S.  Actually music doesn’t come out from my Fun Music Box, your humming is required, have fun.

***************** more about this project *************

What I wanted to make but couldn't are more monkeys on the lid:  The one which has a key for lock to Mandrill and plays with Mandrill, the one which tries to eat Panda Bears' heart-shaped cookies, the one which blows pinwheel and the one which tries to give some bananas to the elephants.

Not only because I didn't have enough time left  and most of all I don't have any skill to make mentioned monkeys.

It was really difficult to assemble this box with mechanical movement inside.... nothing goes just as I calculated.

I am going to explain a little more about  this box that I had thought and planned for weeks.  ← I was haunted by those animals that want to move!

plan

1.  Cage of Mandrill:  The square frame is cookie and bars of cage are fondant.   I have tried to make the cage with only cookie but the dough was spread and spaces between bars were irregular, that makes it harder to make mandrills.

I attached cookie behind fondant Mandrill but the cookie is smaller than fondant.  This is because I wanted to make the lock part as thin as possible but stand still with the thickness of cookie.  I wanted the gap which we can see from elephant side as narrow as I can.

2.  Mechanical part:  First I tried to make the axis and bars with fondant but it didn't work.  I used spaghetti (again)    I thought putting 2 "U" shapes for axis but to hold this, I needed supports of extra cookies inside because this whole shape is not strong enough.  If I did this, the inside of box was going to be too crowded to handle.  (the last drawing)

3.  The angle of Monkey A and Monkey B:  They are parallel but I wasn't sure that is the good angle, so I tried different angles.   Weight, how 2 monkeys come out, how strong the axis, I consider those and reached my answer, they should be parallel.

Ideas behind those animals

Panda bears with heart shaped sweets:  I always think Panda bears eat green things and they may want to eat something different.   They may want to play with bowl and whisk.

Meerkats:  what do they look at anyway?  Aren't they looking at winds that we can't see?

Elephants:  they always wish banana should be within their reach

Mandrill:  they know they are strong enough to break the lock but they are kind enough to entertain us.

Ok Ryoko, you REALLY thought out of the box with this project!! So smart and skillful! Amazing work. Congratulations 🥰

Actually, I think she took "inside the box" VERY literally and really explored that aspect of the challenge to its fullest!

Oh, I forgot to write this in my first comment, well I really should now.
