I was born and raised in Sri Lanka. In the hill capital of Sri Lanka is the city of Kandy. In Kandy is a Buddhist temple named “The temple of the tooth relic.” Enshrined in this temple is a tooth relic of the Lord Buddha. Every year towards the end of July early August, there is a pageant called the “Kandy Perahera (meaning parade). The street pageant is well known around the world. There are various performers. The stars of this pageant in my opinion are the beautifully adorned elephants. These elephants are draped in lavish cloth and illuminated with lights. The main elephant carries the tooth relic in this parade. Elephants are a big part of Sri Lankan culture. These cookies are my interpretation of these elephants.

The cookies were first royal iced in black. I used fondant for the draped cloth to show movement. I then piped designs free hand and dusted with gold dust, silver dust and used dragees to depict lights. (I used the black backdrop for these photo to mimic the dark night).
