Hi Lori, thank you for your comment. I hope I can explain how I paint. I've been playing with Tones clear vanilla. I like it much better than vodka. It smells better too. I've been painting in watercolors for 20 years and applied the techniques I use with that to the food color and vanilla mix. I found with trial and error, that if I start with a thick consistency of color, using just a little vanilla, I have less problems with it damaging the icing. Then if I want a soft effect, I found out purely by accident that once you lay your thick consistency color down, then touch an area with only clear vanilla on your brush, it creates a gorgeous pattern that softens your area. I also do a layering technique, especially if I want a hazy background. I start with my "paint" being mostly vanilla and less color. I allow the area I'm working on to dry and go back to it and add more layers. This is truly an exercise in patience. But, it pays off. Don't give up! Play with it some more. Spread some icing on a plate or a board, let it dry and just play with it to see how it behaves. Happy accidents are where I end up discovering some of the coolest techniques.
