I think that tiny craters in dots happen for all the same reasons that they happen in larger spaces, and that the answers under the above link will provide good guidance on this topic.

** I'm leaving this forum open (though there is already a very related one), so that people can address this particular type of cratering in small dots. Please do not address general cratering issues here though, but rather in the link above. Thanks.
