Better late than never I guess, so here's my two cents: yes, check out the color wheel before starting. If you can, color & use your icing in a way that allows you to add a different food color to the leftover icing to get a new color (ex: start with your leftover yellow, add a bit of blue to get green or a bit of red to get orange.) I try to figure out which color to start with by this method. I also do all my outlining last so I can mix all my leftover icing together, then add a bit of black.
