I use plates and trays from the party store, or even supermarket oversized foil trays that I cover with cloth. The fabric store near me always has cheap remnants. If I need a very specific shape I'll create it out of foam board.

I had a cake friend years ago whose husband made her the most amazing display cases from scrap wood. I keep hinting to my husband but so far no luck. :-)
