For this design, I started out with a 14-sided polygon. The only sketching on paper that I do is the basic line work to connect the points. I can draw all of the additional lines that I want but it's not going to show me how the 3-D effect will look. Once I have a sketch, I try to figure out in my mind what patterns might work. The next step is to "sketch" the design in royal icing to see how the pattern lays out. The attached photo shows one of the designs that I saw.
