Challenge #17 – Stenciled Scenes.  I really enjoyed this challenge.  It wasn’t very long ago that I was incredibly intimidated by stencils, for all sorts of reasons.  I kept practicing however slowly built up enough confidence to experiment.  For this cookie, I stenciled with airbrush, royal icing, sponges and transfers.  I tried to create the look of rocks by sponging part of one of Julia’s floral stencils.  Here are the stencils I used

I decided to not mess with the water or landscape more.  I didn’t want to mess things up or take away from the primary goal of stenciling.

These are some excellent stenciling techniques used to create your scene. I really love the three-dimensional element. I'm also glad that you pointed out the importance of practice. Did you find one technique more challenging than the others? Did you have a favorite technique for this challenge?

The most difficult part for me was the rocks.  As I mentioned, I used part of the floral stencil to mimic stones.  The problem I had was in the consistency of the color used for sponging.  The darker base color was too thin.  When I stenciled with the top color, it bled a bit into the bottom.  I should have waited longer for it to dry and maybe used a thicker top coat.  I don't mind the end result though so it worked out okay.  I enjoyed the stenciling the grass on the bottom the most.  I think this is because I have an increased confidence with the airbrush!

The airbrushing looks great and well done, but everything looks really looks fantastic.

I love how you mixed and matched so many stencils, and I never would have thought to use that large flower for the rocks, but I think it was really effective.

Thank you Julia.  I first tried the large flower with dark petal dust on paper and the contrasting colors made it very defined.  It looked pretty cool. The definition was lost with the sponging because I didn't wait for things to properly dry. I'm not displeased though.  Some of the stencils (particularly yours) have so many things going on - there really are all sorts of possible uses.  I have to keep editing myself!πŸ˜‚
