Hi Friends! 👋
This is my ode to Chinese New Year 2023. Starting from the bottom layer up, t is composed of:
- sugar cookie
- thin layer of red icing
- red fondant
- fondant molded items: rabbit, lanterns, flowers
- lots of use of edible pens and luster dusts

The top Chinese word (in gold) says: Rabbit
The four bottom Chinese words (in black) say: Happy Chinese New Year

I attempted to make this in Royal Icing, but I am still so new to this application that after many failed r.o. attempts I switched to fondant. I think that one of my biggest hindrances to being success with r.o., is my *shaky hands* (as seen in the boarder drawing) … next of course is not enough practice (which I will continue to work on), and possibly not quite understanding the icing consistency requirements.

The inspiration for this piece came from many different sites including Pinterest, Google, and Vecteezy … not copying any one in particular but maybe being inspired by an element here, and another there.

I want to work on about 6 different designs over the next few days as I have a few very special friends who are Chinese and I look forward to gifting them with some cookies made from the heart.

Have a lovely week, everyone. ❤️

Warmly,

Sandy

WOW!! Sandy, it's so fantastic!! Love the deep red and gold! I'm already looking forward to your next cookies@Sandy_S ❤️

Oh thanks so much, Gabi. I hope to get at least one or two more done later today. I just wish I was better at photographing them. I will have to search this site and youtube to see if I can find helpful info. re: best settings/filters/adjustments, etc. to use (iPhone 13 and iPad Pro), as well as info on backgrounds. If you know of anything that might help, please feel free to make suggestions. Your pictures always look so nice.

Thank you so much dear Sandy!
I only take pictures like this with a camera!! You can set a lot more and bring the desired blur or details better into the picture. The pictures that were taken without flash or those that have a light source around the cookie to be photographed usually look best. So if necessary work with mirrors to brighten dark areas. Aluminum foil also works very well for this purpose! Sometimes a sheet of white, glossy paper is enough. Just try it and see what comes out of it...

I would recommend the iPhone (11+) for night shots! Just for Christmas with lights in the background! The pictures almost always look exactly like the atmosphere is! Sometimes I wonder how those tiny lenses in the IPhone can bring so much light into a night picture??! ... Would be worth a try.

The photo boxes that can be bought are highly recommended. A black or dark gray background looks best especially with your red, black and gold Chinese cookies. The light is then "swallowed" or dampened by the black background and on the finished picture you can still see the exact contours of your cookie despite the amount of black.

I also try out a lot of things. And now don't laugh, but after a whole photo session I'm sweaty and exhausted...!! Then I usually took more than 130 pictures and there are only a few that I like and then there are always two or three of those that I use. Photography is real work, but it's sooooo much fun when you have pictures that are just like you imagined!
Only at the very end is the image processing added, for example if there are still too many shadows in the image and the color looks too gray than it really is, then I remove these shadows using image processing. I hope it's of some help to you? 😘

Oh my goodness, Gabi … Thank you so very much for you very generous sharing of lots of great ideas.  I will definitely give all of those ideas a try. I do have a small light box that I will try first (easiest), and if I can’t get good results I will try your other suggestions.

It sounds like you enjoy your photography about as much as you enjoy the cookie decorating.  😀

Again, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You are a sweetheart and I really appreciate you. What a great resource and source of support and encouragement you are to this cookie community. ❤️

Hugs!

Oh mein Gott, Gabi …

Umarmung!

Awww... du rührst mich zu Tränen liebe Sandy!! Ich habe nur deine Frage beantwortet. Vielen Dank!! Umarmungen auch an dich, mein neuer Cookie-Freund! ❤️ ❤️ @Sandy_S

... Yes, I love photography almost as much, that's true!
