Hi all, so I just moved into a new house and went to bake my first batch of cookies. I use an oven thermometer so I checked and even though my temp was set at 375, therm. read 400 which is what I want - put cookies in and 12 minutes in, the cookies weren't done (normally they take 8.5) and at 13 mins, they were burnt! I watched the oven for the next 20 mins without cookies and the temp set at 375 ranged from 350-450 randomly. Any suggestions?! I have cookies due Monday!! Thanks in advance!

Most ovens do vary internally about 25F or so, but 100F is extreme. Call an appliance repair person. A controller or something is probably broken.

Oh, I missed the "cookies due Monday" part. If you can't get it fixed soon, then do as Patricia said - drop the temp and bake slower and longer. And rotate the sheets a lot especially if there is a hot spot.

Try a couple of thermometers in the oven too. Thermometers can also go bad, so perhaps it was just a measurement fluke and an isolated baking mishap.

Even so, you could probably get a repair person there in 24 hours.
