Hi, all, just a reminder that I'm sponsoring the annual cookie competition again this year at Kerry Vincent's Oklahoma Sugar Art Show (OSSAS)! In addition to prizes that I'm personally rounding up, both Chefmaster and CookieCutterKingdom are contributing to the prize loot this year! First, second, and third places will be awarded!

But, better than any loot is the personal challenge of entering (and potentially winning) a contest of this sort. It's a great opportunity to stretch your skills in a low-risk environment! And, the show entries (not just the cookies, but the cakes) are consistently a phenomenal source of inspiration.

Anyway, I hope you'll consider joining the fun. To join, you must fill out an OSSAS entry form (here) by September 1, 2015, follow the entry rules (here, page 3 under "Julia Usher's Creative Decorated Cookies"), and get your cookies to the show, of course!

Best of luck to all who enter!

For more information, please visit the OSSAS site (here), or contact the OSSAS team directly here.

P.S. A word on judging criteria, as they may help guide your design. This year, as in the past, entries will be scored on a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being excellent) across each of these five criteria:

  • Number of techniques used
  • Difficulty of techniques used
  • Mastery of techniques used (i.e., cleanliness of work, attention to detail, skill level demonstrated, etc.)
  • Originality of design (aka creativity; points will be deducted if the design is a copy of another artist's work)
  • Overall appeal

And, of course, the entry needs to meet the 12 cookie minimum set forth in the OSSAS entry rules, with the cookie set having a cohesive design or theme.

Total scores for each entry are then tallied and ranked to determine the top-scorers. These top-scoring entries are discussed in detail among the judges in order to finalize first, second, and third place winners.

Again, if you have further questions, please direct them to the OSSAS site using the contact link above.

Best of luck to all who enter!

Hi Julia!

I am so looking forward to this as it would be my first competition ever. I was wondering if there was a place to view past cookie winners so I could get an idea of displays and criteria being looked at.

Great, yes, I have spotlighted the winners of the past two competitions on this site here (see top two posts): http://cookieconnection.juliau...State+Sugar+Art+Show

In the past, entries have been evaluated on several factors, such as number of techniques used, difficulty of techniques, cleanliness of the work, and originality of design. Of course, each entry also has to meet the minimum requirement of 12 cookies in a creative set.

ADDENDUM: I just added the exact judging criteria into the original post, above. Check 'em out!

I'd love to see your presentation at this event.  I've seen these promo'd shows but have never given thought to entering; I know I am not good enough...  Smiling.

It is too far for me to travel.  Besides, I know I am not good enough.  Smiling.

I highly doubt I have all the skills but I don't care. It's an adventure and what I will come away with from doing this is worth far more than a material prize. Experience, meeting other people, learning where I'm at and where to go next is what I seek.  We all start somewhere.
