I am a beginner! My boss is retiring, and I thought it would be nice to make cookies with our company logo. I worked with a company to create a custom cookie cutter but now I'm not sure how to go about decorating the cookie. Fondant? Royal Icing?  The letters should be blue with a white background. Any suggestions for a very determined beginner who has about a week to figure this all out would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, @Carolyn G. If I look at the logo the first and easiest thing that comes to my mind is to decorate a cookie stick with a custom stencil of the logo.  So you just need to stencil the logo on the cookies flooded in white (once the icing is dry...).

But since you have already purchased the cookie cutter, and the embossed logo is already a decoration, I wouldn’t mind the naked cookies (no fondant nor royal icing). Maybe you could work to avoid to mishape the cookies by cutting the dough when is cold and firm. You'll want to do the cutting directly on parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, remove the excess dough and lift the mat or paper directly onto the cookie sheet for baking, without touching the cookies.

You might also be interested in this technique by Jinnee @Classic.Cookies. She just paints the embossing and leaves most of the cookie naked. Unfortunately I could find only one of her cookies here on the site (click here), as all her beautiful collection of cookies seems not to be in her “Content” anymore... maybe she could add her insight here...

I agree with the above suggestions - or (1) Flood the deeper areas with white. Let them dry, and then pipe blue food coloring in the remaining areas. This would be a very labor-intensive approach, but the cutter does provide nice piping guides for the letters. (2) Or paint the background blue, leaving the letter areas clear. Then pipe the white into the letter areas. This would be faster.

Also - be sure you have permission from those at the top to have copied the logo. Logos are typically copyrighted material. I can't imagine they would object to its use for this purpose, but you never know until you ask.

I'd do the letters first if you are going to fill the whole cookie with icing, but fill them high so they serve as boundaries for the blue icing. I think you'll end up with a neater piped look this way, because if any blue icing flows into the letter areas, those areas will be harder to fill.

However, if painting the blue, I would do it first, so you don't accidentally paint the white letters.

Hello all - thanks for the thoughtful comments.  I played around with various techniques this morning and I settled on using fondant for the background and royal icing for the letters (thanks Econlady ).  I have about a week to work on my piping  and cookie cutting skills.  I plan on making 20 cookies for a party next Thursday.

I'm very appreciative for the advice and that I found a place to ask questions.

Good luck! And  - oops - I thought I read that the letters had to be white and the background blue, so flip "blue" and "white" in everything I said earlier today. Sorry about that - moving pretty fast through messages and emails these days. Unfortunately, that led to some sloppy reading and advice.
