Hi everyone:

I'm attempting to paint on my first cookies today. Can you tell me what is the best way to add color to an area to make it darker? For instance, I am painting a face and right now I've covered the area but it's a bit lighter than I'd like it to be. Should I wait for that to dry and then go over it again, or dip my brush in more paint/less water while the first layer is still wet? Not sure how to do that. I'm afraid of getting too much moisture on the cookie if I add color right now while it's wet. Is that an issue?

Blogging about the ups and downs of learning to decorate cookies keeps it real. The day I stop having fun decorating I will hang up my apron but I don't see that happening for a very long time. I'm on a never ending journey to learn from others more skilled than I am.

Wait to dry the first layer.   Colors tend to be more dark when you add color to your royalicing.  But If the color was not the expected you can paint with dust colors and brushes in dry or in wet (vodka, lemon esence).   When I want to "dress" my snowmen, I put a Little more wáter in my royalicing and paint them when the White layer is total dry. I put the brush in my watered royalicing and apply over the cookie without presure in small touches.  Somethimes I need to apply a second layer. I allways wait until layers are dry.  I don't know if this is helpful to you.

Yes, thank you. That helps a lot. Also, I'm using gel paste with a bit of water (on the side of the paint tray) to paint. I didn't even know you could paint with watered down RI. That is very cool! Another thing I am going to have to try. My list just gets longer and long. :-)

Thank you so much for the information. I'm having fun painting them. It's so different than decorating each color in a different RI color.

Only not to much wáter, you should make a test first.  Or RI will lost it's consistency. Originally Posted by Royal Icing Diaries:

I learned that the hard way. I just finished my first painted cookies and my very first color I knew I had too much water on the brush. I had to use a dry brush to get most of it off and start over. After that I kept swiping the brush on paper towel. These are the cookies. I actually just posed clips of them on the site here.

Not perfect, but for a first attempt I am satisfied with them for sure
