FYI, all: Please know that I am aware that commenting on photos on the site is currently more difficult than it was before, and that I am actively working with Hoop.la to try to get the following two issues addressed:

  • Not able to comment on clips at the clip thumbnail level (without opening the clip)
  • Not able to easily return to jumping-off point on the clip thumbnail page (i.e., once you open and comment on a clip, if you hit the back bar on your browser or backtrack through the site's breadcrumb trail, you get bounced to the top of the clips page rather than back to the photo where you left off)

Since commenting and interacting on the site are so vital to this community, these two items are currently at the top of the list of site issues that I am addressing right now.

But, please be aware that, unless the issue is a bug (something not intentionally programmed by Hoop.la) or a substantial number of their communities also share the same concern, I have to pay, usually considerable amounts, to restore functionality. The latter isn't a possibility, so I am just waiting now to see how they respond to my trouble reports.

**** WORKAROUND ON THIS ISSUE ****

In the meantime, there is a workaround that will reduce the amount of scrolling needed to comment on photos.

You can hover over the image you want to open, and issue a Command-click (Mac) or a Ctrl-click (PC) to open it in a new tab without closing the site. So when you're done commenting on the photo in the new tab, you can just return to the old tab and pick up viewing photos where you left off.

Please note that, depending on your browser, these commands may be different. For instance, in Chrome, I can also right-click on the photo and select "open link in new tab" and get the same result.

Again, I'll let you know of any new developments as soon as I know, but, rest assured, I am working on this! Please be patient and carry on, commenting as best you can!

P.S. The good news is that this backtracking issue does not exist in the blog or forums areas. In both of these places, if you click on your browser back arrow, you should be returned to your jumping off point. But if you click on the previous item in the breadcrumb trail, you will be returned to the top of whatever section or page you were previously on. This setup is ideal, because it allows you two options for backtracking - both of which you might need or want from time to time.

HaH!  Wowwwweeeeee!  I don't know who else told you about this but it is exactly what I was trying to express; i was at a loss on how to explain it lol.  Bravo to whomever explained it.  I'm happy that you understood whomever did it.  I kept thinking of the words but I was sucked up and neurons were firing off!  hahahhaaaaaaa     okay, now I have to remember where this is (duh me) and re-read (duh me) so I know how to get around it (duh me).  lol

Wondering if membership are willing to pool together to cover the cost (don't kill the messenger!).   hahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa  Going  into running man mode!!!!

ps   since i don't know where else to put my psa  and know that all will see your post alert

i publicly apologize to you for allowing myself to ungraciously fall into the abyss.  I am truly sorry!  I am ashamed of myself.  saying zillions of mea culpas    (sp?)

No worries, Dona! All is good.

I had a couple of people point these issues out to me, but they were already on my radar screen. I first noticed and reported them back when I was testing the site before it went live; I just didn't advertise them, because I wanted to see how big an issue they really would be for the community.

While having the membership pool together to fund the cost is a generous idea, I don't think it would be feasible. In order to make custom changes to the core code of the site (not just cosmetic formatting changes), I would need to upgrade to a premium account, which would triple the monthly costs of supporting this site on an ongoing basis. It would not be a one-time charge, unfortunately. While I am considering offering an opt-in premium membership to members that would help defray ongoing site costs (which are increasing as the site grows), it would be at much more affordable levels than what this fix requires.

All I can do really is wait and see if Hoop.la addresses it.* Just so you know, they have eventually fixed nearly every issue I have ever reported, but some take longer than others for the reasons I mentioned above.

*ADDITIONAL CONTEXT ON THIS DECISION: Even if I had the money to upgrade to a premium account and pay for this fix, I would prefer to deploy the money in other ways first - i.e., to paying contributors and a co-Editor/Chief Admin to take over many of the unpaid jobs that are required to run this site.

I don't have any news here, and may not before Christmas. So you'll have to use the workaround for now. I'd suggest Googling how to open a new tab in your particular browser - every browser is different.
