Hi, again!

As the site has grown over the last month so too has the number of spammers, unfortunately. The last spamming war was waged in the wee hours of this morning whilst I was emerging from deep sleep! Unbeknownst to me, someone posing as "juliausher123" (of all names! ) repeatedly posted to the forums about the latest Nike footwear, or maybe it was about the new and improved Baby Bjorn. I don't recall exactly . . . as I said, I was pretty sleepy . . .

Apparently there are legions of real, live people who get paid to post crud like this during off hours, when site moderators are least suspecting! And because they are real, live people, they can get past the standard (and even not so standard) captcha filters.

Thanks to some vigilant members who have reported many of these posts (and to the late hours that I typically keep), I've been catching this stuff quite early, before much rampant posting can be done. But seeing as I can't be near the computer 24/7 and it's time consuming to delete posts after the fact, I am upgrading to a more aggressive spam filter, effective tonight.

The new system can apparently detect spam-like comments before they post, and will send them into a moderation queue for me to approve or reject. There is some remote chance, I suppose, of a legit comment getting detected as spam, but they (my site hosts) tell me it's small.

Anyway, I am only telling you all of this so you know that I'll be testing this new system over the next week or so. Hopefully it will make my life easier and also eliminate any spam that you may have detected. But if you notice any changes in how the site is receiving and posting your comments (delays or other weirdness), please let me know.

Many thanks!

Whisked Away - I think the new filter just caught one of your airbrushing comments for some reason. But I just approved it. Wondering if I'll now spend more time moderating comments than cleaning up spam. We'll see!

But, apparently, the system is "smart," in that it learns from what I delete or approve so that good content won't end up in my moderation queue and spam won't sneak through.

I don't know how you do all that you do...but I certainly appreciate all of your efforts!  This is one of the few sites/forums I've been on that has such a low amount of spam.  Now I know why!

The new system is vastly improved, but still not 100-percent foolproof. It thought some of your snappier replies (like "Pretty!" and "Nice!") were spam, so they went into my moderation queue this week. Don't be surprised if a post does not appear immediately, as it may be a function of the spam system trying to figure out right from wrong, and me then getting to the moderation queue to check out suspect posts. I only do the latter a few times a day.
