I use textured mats which are becoming less expensive, and tire of the design quickly. I couldn't imagine investing in a rolling pin. You would need so many. There are so many textures around the house one can use to make imprints. I saw someone attach a piece of raised vinyl lace tablecloth on a wooden rolling pin and create a beautiful texture. Another used a rubber iron holder and made dots. When working with fondant we need to use our imaginations. There are so many molds and mats and rolling pins out there we want but do we really need them or can we accomplish the same beauty with less out of pocket expenditure.? Good luck in finding what you are looking for! T

Agree with Tina that there are lots of common household items that can be used for texturing fondant or modeling chocolate (one of my faves is a tracing wheel used for sewing - for stitch marks). But there are also a lot of cool tools too, especially for those times when you can't fabricate exactly what you had in mind from what's on hand. I use both mats and pins; both work well. I let the pattern guide which one I might buy, but I tend to be more impulsive in my purchasing!

Both Country Kitchen SweetArt and Global Sugar Art have huge selections of mats and pins:

OH the tracing wheel, ah ha! I have one of those and couldn't for the like of me figure out how they did the stitch marks and was doing those by hand. Thanks a million for that info!

I wish I had the financial ability to buy all the fantastic products in the market. I can't, so I improvise. But I really wish I had allot of the neat stuff out there.

I have bought things that were not necessary in the end, things that I get bored with or cause repetition in my work, molds that look prefab and hence lose their uniqueness, something that doesn't happen with hand made.

I am leaving for the States in 2 weeks and will have a spending spree but now that I am more experienced I will be in a position to buy smarter and make every penny count!
