I'm calling our next chat "Meet-up with Manu," because you're going to have the special opportunity to get to know our very own Cookie Connection contributor , Manuela Pezzopane (aka Manu), that much better. As one of our very fine tutorialists, she's in the perfect position to tell us all about what goes into writing and photographing a great cookie tutorial. She, of course, will also be ready to share tips about how she conceives of and executes her marvelously unique cookie designs. I...Read More...

Apple-Flavored Royal Icing

I am getting ready to make some back to school cookies and found a recipe for cinnamon apple cookies, which I am going to test for spreading and the royal icing recipe that is with it says to add apple juice concentrate to the icing mix. I am not great at understanding the science behind certain things. Does anyone know if the apple juice concentrate will affect the hardening of the icing or make the icing look spotty. Thank you.Read More...

Weekly Cookie Themes?

I have been baking cookies for my bridge club every week. I often make card-themed cookies (the four suits of playing cards), but I also make cookies related to the closest relevant holiday. Does anyone have any ideas about a source for themes for cookies for every week? The big holidays are obvious, but in those months (like August) where there are no major holidays, I don't necessarily have good ideas for what to bake.Read More...

Upcoming Vacation and Saturday Spotlight Gap

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! Just a heads-up: next Saturday, I'll be on a short vacation in Argentina, followed by a class there the next Saturday, so I will be unable to post another Spotlight until August 12 . (However, I just posted this week's edition, and it's full of great cookies! If you haven't yet seen it, click here .) My apologies for another gap in coverage, but I'll be sure to make up for it when I get back. We've got another chat, a new challenge, and a Cookier Close-up or two, all coming up very...Read More...
Hello, I offered, as a wedding gift, to send cookies to a nephew’s upcoming wedding in December. I am in the Middle East and the cookies are going all the way to America. I know from previous experience that the mail takes two weeks, but I want to have a margin of time in case I need to send replacements for broken cookies, etc. I only make cookies as surprise gifts for family and friends, usually for Christmas, so this is the first time I have a deadline. I want to make the cookies as early...Read More...

Julia, thank you so much for all of the time you've put into developing your techniques & instructions to make it easier for someone like me to get the courage to try something new! Does anyone have an Ultimate Cookies cookbook they'd like to sell? I've downloaded the app & the video series on Amazon & really love them. I'll be making some dough today to get my practice in. I'm a beginner/intermediate & have decided I'm going to go for it & get my cottage industry license...Read More...

July Site Art - Just Rotated!

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! As you probably noticed, I just rotated our site art. We were lucky to have two site art submissions for this month, so, now that we're at the mid-month mark, @Kim Damon's summer church fair-themed set is taking over for @Magadiuz's glorious blue butterflies. To read more about our July site artists, and to see their submissions in more detail, please check out our earlier introduction to them, here . Thanks again, Kim and Ina, for your...Read More...
Hello everyone! I just wanted to let you know that since both Julia and I have been on the road quite a bit this past month, the recap for the latest challenge will be slightly delayed. The recap, which would normally appear this Saturday, July 15th, will post a few days later, sometime around July 18th or 19th. We appreciate your patience! [Julia's Note: This means there will also be no usual Saturday Spotlight on Saturday to replace the challenge recap. Saturday Spotlight s will resume on...Read More...

Coloring Not Sticking to Cookies When Painting?

Hello, all! I am new here but very happy to have found you. I was inspired to start painting cookies after seeing Julia's videos but I'm having some trouble! As I am painting cookies, it's almost as if the surface of the royal icing is repelling the color. It doesn't seem to happen more with one color than another. This has been incredibly frustrating because I can barely get an even coat of color because it starts separating and almost beading up. I use a meringue powder-based royal icing,...Read More...
