Hi, everyone. I awoke, as I'm sure many of you did, to learn of the devastating flooding and landslides in Japan ( https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/07...ly-floods/index.html ), which have caused several deaths and millions to evacuate their homes. The news and images are utterly heartbreaking. I heard from our some of our members this morning who reported that they are "okay". I am so overjoyed to hear this, but very worried about our other members and friends. Please know my heart goes out to...Read More...

Julia in Cake Masters' New "Cookie Icon" Feature

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all! I'm thrilled to announce that I was recently interviewed for Cake Masters Magazine 's new "Cookie Icon" feature. It's wonderful to see the Cake Masters editors extending this traditionally cake-focused feature into cookies! Here's a link to my interview . (It's also a bit amusing to see they edited me into a Brit! Never in my life have I used the word "mum" for "mom"! ) The entire July 2018 issue is also available for purchase on the Cake Master s' site here .Read More...

Manu, Our July Site Artist, Does It Again!

Julia M. Usher
Thanks again to Manu for adapting some of her photos from her recent (and completely stunning) water lily tutorial to fit our banner and backdrop! Lucky us, they'll be gracing our site throughout the entire month of July! They look absolutely splendid, don't they?! As noted in last month's site art post , I am now officially out of site art for the rest of the year, and I would love to feature YOURS! Hi, all! Craftsy has done it again with another cookie decorating course. This latest one , by @Anne Yorks of Flour Box Bakery, shows how to make fun and fabulous cookies for all four seasons of the year. I have not taken this course, but, judging from Anne's popularity on the Craftsy site, it's bound to be another good one. Also to note: If you sign up to take this class through any of the links in this post (like this one ) or in this site's sidebars (all of which are...Read More...
Hi, all! First, huge thanks to Cookie Connection members @mintlemonade (cookie crumbs) and @Ryoko ~Cookie Ave.! In an effort to lure more Japanese members to this site, they generously volunteered to translate the site's Terms of Use (利用規約) and Photo Posting Guidelines (画像・動画投稿について ―― 投稿する前に必ずお読みください) into Japanese! THANK YOU, LADIES! Now, everyone will find links to the Japanese translations at the top of each of those pages (links above), and also directly below: Terms of Use...Read More...

Hi, all, I've been receiving an unusually large number of questions about how members can edit or delete their own content. It's super important for you to know how to do this, as I typically do not edit posts for people, unless I happen to see a misclassified image or other typo. It can also take me several hours to days to respond to site inquiries like this, as I work several other jobs. That being said, your surest bet for getting a quick answer is to familiarize yourself with our site...Read More...
Hi, all, regrettably, I've recently had to delete some images from challenges and other areas of the site due to lack of compliance with Rule #8 of our posting guidelines, which states that artwork (including characters, from Disney, Hasbro, etc.) cannot be copied and posted here without permission from the creator : http://cookieconnection.juliau...READ-BEFORE-YOU-POST In response to those deletions, some members have asked me why so many licensed character cookies exist on the site,...Read More...

We all have different message-reading tastes, so Cookie Connection has been designed to allow for everyone's individual differences! The site's default email and onsite alert notifications are set to show you most of the site info that you could get notified about, just so you're aware of the site's full functionality. But I recognize that this amount of info may (or may not) be overkill for you. That said, I recommend that you edit your "Notifications" settings as soon as you join the site...Read More...

Removing Icing from Sides of Cookie

I wasn't sure if this is the right area for this topic, so if not, Julia, please move to appropriate section. So, I am a beginner and at times get sloppy with royal icing. So I have finally finished a cookie that I am really pleased with but unfortunately I did get some icing on the sides of my cookie from my messy hands. Is there an easy way to take that off? I used a sharp knife to scrape it off but just wondered if there are other tips and tricks (besides not being a messy decorator which...Read More...

Needing Help With These Hats!!

emilymader
Hello everyone! I am facing a design dilemma with these darn hats that my mother has insisted upon for her family reunion (the last name is Hatt, and she thinks it's too cute to do hats. Ugh. Lol). She bought the cutter and everything, and wanted 4 dozen cookies. I have never done an order this large. She is family, so she gets the family price. So . . . in short, I am unmotivated because I wanted to do something else, but she insisted on the hats. So far I have them flooded with brown icing...Read More...

Royal Icing Tested

Hello! I’m working on starting up my cookie business in Arizona since we just got stationed here. Unfortunately, my royal Icing has to be tested for pH and water activity to see if it’s potentially hazardous. Has anyone had this done successfully? Or is it a lost cause. I’m sending mine to a lab next week, but if it does not pass what can I do?Read More...

Upcoming October Classes with Julia (Me!) in Japan

Julia M. Usher
Hi, all. Just a quick note to say that my upcoming courses in Japan recently went on sale, and there are still a few places left. I'd love to see those of you I've come to know here in person , so here's the basic info. I am doing two types of classes in two places: both Kobe and Tokyo. The first one is a one-day fundamentals class and the other is a two-day more advanced class covering 3-D techniques. (See pictures of the projects below.) And here are the dates: October 17: One-Day...Read More...

Gold Royal Icing Color

Bear Clan Cookies
Hi! I am in search of the best “bling-y” gold icing colors out there. Most of my royal icing is mustard color, not the pretty, shiny gold I’m seeing out there. What are your favourite shiny gold gels, or dusts, or any other means of creating shiny, blingy gold cookies? Thank you!Read More...

Wedding Seating Card/Favor Cookies

IDA
My daughter married in March and we were looking for a clever way to create seating cards but in cookie form that could double as a favor for guests. I am by no means a "professional baker/decorator" but I can hold my own when it comes to creating cookies and I love a challenge. The hardest part for me was setting up the first name and table number on Microsoft Word but after that it was a breeze to print on edible wafer paper. Here is what I came up with for the more than 200 wedding guests...Read More...

High Altitude Baking and More

Homemade for Heroes
Hi. I'm from Mexico and have been asked to make cookies. There are a few minor obstacles in my way that I'm hoping to get some help with. All we have here is an unrefined slightly coarse sugar, not the huge granular sugar and not very brown. Are there any variations I should use in the recipe? Next is baking temp and time. Any variances there? This is last-minute or I'd search the site. I did spend about an hour here last night on egg white royal icing. No MP (meringue powder) here! And...Read More...

Hi, Everyone!

Sandi Vanderwall
My name is Sandi Vanderwall, and I am brand new at this as of November 2017. My husband gave me an ADC airbrush system and some templates. I purchased many molds and love to airbrush cookies and then add fondant items. I just submitted 3 of my cookies today (6/6/18). I am retired and settling down in an awesome semi-retirement community. I also was one of the lucky ones to register for the 2018 CookieCon! I am very excited to be a part of Cookie Connection . Oh, and the name of my small...Read More...

FDA-Approved Gold Luster Dust

Forum: Suppliers
emilymader
Hi, everyone, I've done some searching on the site but haven't found a recent post on this topic (most are old and the links are dead or not working). It seems a lot of people use "non-toxic" gold luster dusts on their cookies, but it is my understanding that these are not approved for consumption and should not be given to consumers. I have used the Wilton dusts and they're okay, but I'm wondering if anyone has found another FDA-approved dust that maybe has a little more "wow" factor? I'm...Read More...

My White Royal Icing Bubbles! Help!

Carissa
I make all my royal icing from the same exact recipe, however, when I flood with white icing, it ALWAYS bubbles and it looks like little pimples when it dries. I have tried tapping the cookie to release the bubbles, but it does not work. All my other colors are super smooth, no bubbling. I am wondering if it is the white coloring I use? Any suggestions would be most appreciated!Read More...

Thanks to @Manu, who so kindly succumbed to my urgent pleas for site art, we have some wonderfully summery cookies dressing up our banner and backdrop this month! Manu simply repurposed and re-cropped some images from her recent knot tutorial to come up with the following banner and backdrop, which you now see on the site: What a charming harbinger of the coming season, don't you think?! BTW, neither Manu nor I was concerned about the different patch of wood in the...Read More...

Hi, if you view this site in Safari, you may be noticing some broken image links. A broken image link will appear as a question mark in a blue box, as in the "Members at the Moment" graphic on the right side of the home page, shown below. Broken image links seem to be an issue with only those images that I have stored on an external site, and only when the site is viewed in Safari. (When viewed in Chrome, for instance, the images are all showing up just fine.) Anyway, I just wanted to let...Read More...

General Packaging Advice

Hello! I'm new to the forums and new to the cookie business (custom decorated sugar cookies with royal icing). I'm really struggling with figuring out the best way to package my cookies and was hoping to get some advice on how others do it. I've searched the forum and have some good ideas, but have a couple of specific questions I couldn't really find an answer to: 1) I purchased a heat sealer and have been individually wrapping my cookies for orders where they'll be handed out individually...Read More...

Poly Shrink Bags

Homemade for Heroes
Kinda long . . . Question at the end if you just want to skip to it. I make hand drawn cookies for the military. I do it as a thank you. I don’t sell or take orders and it’s all out of pocket. I am continually floored by the generosity and kindness of the people I’ve met on this journey. Saturday there was a knock on the door and a package left. I hadn’t ordered anything so thought it was a goodie from my son overseas. It was not. It was 500 individual bags for cookies. I was confused, as I...Read More...
