Before I started decorating cookies (nearly 4 years ago) my biggest passion was culinary. I admire a lot of world famous chefs and Anthony Bourdain is one of them. He was the rock star on the culinary stage and he will be missed by billions. I highly estimate your decision @Bakerloo Station ♥ to make a challenge devoted to his life because our lives are what we should be judged by and nothing else. He gave a lot to this world and he deserves to be remembered even in the cookie world. The country I picked was Spain (I’m from Bulgaria so no problem). My cookies present a ritual that is performed in Catalonia. The 'baixada de les falles' is a sort of slow walking march carrying large flaming torches from the mountains nearby to the village centers which, in the distant past, was meant 'to offer a collective pray to the Sun to stop the shortening of the days'. In the rural world, festivals are closely linked to the agricultural and solar. To pull out the fire, a symbol of the sun, from the mountains and bring it down to the village serves to purify the fields and forests, as well as to purify the population and preserve it from evil spirits. These practices are related to the ancient Sun worship rites and are traced back to before the arrival of Indo-Europeans several millenia ago. These days is more a festival in which young and adults of the towns involved have a good time for the remembrance of this very old tradition. And a little bit about my cookies. These were actually a custom order for a client that I rejected and a few days after that, when the challenge was opened, I agreed to make these cookies in memory of Anthony Bourdain. This set actually flied to Spain and people who are celebrating this feast will be eating my cookies on 23 June, 2018. They are just royal iced cookies - black icing and marbled technique for the fire and white base for the drawings where I hand painted the walking men.
@Cookieland, Congratulations on being our first challenge entrant! I love this set and all of the gorgeous hand painting. Thank you for the kind words and I am sure Anthony Bourdain would very much appreciate this tribute to Spain. Well done!

I am a huge fan of Catalonian culture and it is one of my very favorite places to visit so I really appreciated this story and the fact that you took the time to explain your inspiration to us!
I did, unfortunately, have to delete your inspiration picture that was attached to your comment for copyright reasons. However, I think your cookies say it all anyway!
