These birthday cake slice cookies are simple to make.  The cookies can be made with wedge-shaped cutters or simply an 8-inch circle cut into wedges with a knife.  After I baked the slices, I filed the edges with a food microplane to make sure the cookies sat together well in the full circle.

The shell borders were piped with a Wilton 352 tip (which I believe is discontinued).  The candle is an orange Pocky cookie stick cut to 1-1/4" length and inserted into another piped star to keep it upright.  Pocky cookies are thin Japanese cookie sticks usually coated in a chocolate or flavored white chocolate coating.  They can be found in Asian markets or in the Asian section of some supermarkets.

The "flame" is royal icing piped with a PME 43 tip.
