I cut my own stencils, and typically use them to airbrush. I wanted to try techniques that I don’t normally work with and get out of my “comfort zone.” This was a challenge! I decided to not use my stencil gene or my airbrush as those are my primary tools I work with every day, aside from the stencils themselves.

I used to love painting with watercolors and have not done so in years. I used multiple tones of blue, green, and purple Americolor gels for the background and foreground, diluting it to give it depth with almond extract. I then used salt to try to create some texture, as this is a technique I had learned years ago in my watercolor classes. I also added a little shimmer with some metalics in the paints.

I have never used a dobber on a stencil and wanted to see the effect of using royal icing and a dobber to create the tree line. Normally I would have used an airbrush, so this was new and therefore a great challenge for me. I thought that it would give me a good texture for the trees to boot. I found that I had to use a thinner icing than stiff consistency, which is what I had started with. It wouldn’t come off the sponge! I did find it difficult to be able to do additional layers as the texture made it difficult to keep the next stencils flat.

I used the “smear” method (for lack of a better term) and a stencil for the animals and front grass. And I created confetti snowflakes with yet another stencil and applied them later as transfers with some royal icing. I loved this project and am quite happy with the outcome!

Hi, this is another lovely cookie, but it appears to use the same stencils and methods as used in your previous entry, and thus is considered a duplicate by the rules of this challenge (we don't allow duplicates of this sort; please see the challenge rules). Please tell Christine and me which of your two entries you would like to keep in the challenge, as we will remove the other from the challenge set. Thank you.

I hadn't realized that. I would like to keep this one please and thank you.

No problem. We've always had a "no duplicate" rule in challenges. In this case, it was stated under "To enter" (last bullet point)"

  • You can enter more than once, but please post only one clip of each distinct entry/cookie. Multiple clips of the same entry/cookie are not allowed unless added in a comment beneath the one primary clip. Please also use different stencils in different ways on each entry.

I'll keep this one in the challenge, and delete the other one from the challenge clip set, but it will remain on the site for everyone to enjoy! Thanks for participating!

This is my first post to the challenge, I'm just glad I didn't miss it yet again! Thank you for having these. I may go try to do another different one with some of my other stencils and see what I can come up with. I do appreciate the opportunity!

I really like the depth of the scene you created here - both by your use of various stenciling techniques, but also through your use of color.  Well done!

Thank you. I like to color in the trees the best in this one. It is my favorite of the three variations that I did and for that reason.

This is lovely! I'm fascinated by your use of salt to create texture - can you let me know more? Does it stick to the cookie or brush off? (I'm actually thinking I'd like to try a cookie with some salt sprinkled on it!)
