My daughter-in-law's birthday is coming up soon ( April 13), and she loves dragons. Do you think you can give me a general idea on how to put something like this together as a birthday gift for her, please?

It's gorgeous, and I know she would love it!

I am trying to show her how much I love her and show her that this is also a very special day -her birthday-for all of us. I have one son, and two daughters, and he is the only one married so far.

I love this.  I'm with MsInes, and would love an idea of how you did this.  My grandson's birthday is coming up and he wants a dragon theme party.  This would be awesome to put on top of a cake!

MsInes and Susan, thanks so much! The dragon was a lot of work (I worked on him for about three weeks) and I don't think I would ever make another! A full tutorial on this would take a while to type up, but I would be happy to give you some tips.

I recommend making a cardboard template first, to ensure that the pieces are the correct size and shape and that he will stand up. I spent the most time on the template--I reshaped the pieces several times in order to get the look I wanted and the necessary stability. I think this is the most important part.

I used a drill to make the holes so they would line up exactly--and because this was for a competition and would not be eaten. For cookies that will be eaten, I would recommend making the holes with your cookie pop stick before baking.

I iced both sides of all the cookies except the legs, so leave plenty of time to let the sides dry before flipping them over.

I ended up filing some of the pieces down a little with a zester to get a proper fit.

I hope this helps! And I would love to see a picture if you end up making your own cookie dragons!

Дорогая Лаки Пенни, я рискну создать нечто подобное, и обязательно размещу фото на сайте... Ваш Дракон Великолепен...

You did an amazing job.  Thank you for the tips.  I hadn't even thought about having to ice both sides of the pieces and allowing enough time for drying.  I'm going to think about it and see if I can come up with a template.  My husband is an architect and draws pretty well, so I might be able to get him to help me.  If I do it, I will definitely post it.  Thank you again!!!

Ms.Lucky,

Thanks so much for all the instructions given the fact that this is a custom made piece. It makes all the sense in the world that it wasn't easy to offer an easy way to make something like this. But, it is SO, SO pretty and unique that I would like to give it a try. I love challenges like this one, and I promise if I can finish the project, and it looks good I will posted here with a special attention note just for you. My daughter-in-law would love it! You are so talented, and full of grace. Loved the transparency at trying to help all of us with the directions and other information related to this project. Thank you, thank you, and God bless you!
