What's on the 5th of November is that the night the Devil comes out but he looks awesome here among the flames

5th of November is a night of celebration and commemoration in the UK, remembering the defeat of a catholic plot to blow up the house of lords and king James the 1st in parliament. Guy Fawkes was found with 36 barrels of gunpowder under the house of lords on the 5th November 1605. He was tried with treason. Bonfires were lit that night in celebration that the conspiracy failed and this tradition has continued ever since, with some form of explosives also added to the celebrations, which have evolved into fireworks. The face is a Guy Fawkes mask. For centuries, guys (representations of public and often religious figures or devils in centuries past, now more commonly Guy Fawkes) have been burned on the bonfires. this form of the mask was popularised by the graphic novel and much later the film, V for Vendetta, which features blowing up the houses of parliament as a protest by the people against an increasingly fascist government. The bonfire night rhyme was used in the film. "Remember, remember, the 5th of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot."

Thank you for asking the question. It is easy to forget that some national celebrations are not recognised outside of our own country! I recommend the film, by the way. It is violent but also very clever.
