Hi! Has anyone tried projecting a design on a cookie with a smaller projector like a Pico? Just wondering if it is really necessary to spend the expense of a Kopykake if similar results can be achieved. I know there is a post about building your own Kopykake. Wouldn't it be possible to send an image to a pocket projector and do the same thing? What am I missing?

I don't project images very often, so I don't have a pico projector. But many use them with great results, and it seems they are now nearly universally preferred over the Kopykake, which is old technology and large and clunky.

I had a kopykake years ago, and I hated it. The device was huge, sizing was a matter of trial and error, and the image was always dim and difficult to see (so much so that I’m still not convinced it wasn’t broken.) Plus, it was crazy expensive. Now I use a Pico in combination with the Camera Lucida app on an iPad. I can take a picture of my sketch, resize it instantly, even mirror the image or reverse black and white (which is great when piping on a dark background.) The image is clear and easy to focus, even when the lights are on. And it was significantly less expensive. I highly recommend it!

I’ve owned both and I prefer the pico.  I agree the pico is large, clunky and only works well in the dark.  Also, it gets very hot working with it and I would get horrible hot flashes so my hands were hot and melting the icing.  The downside with the pico is setup is more involved and if you haven’t charged it in advance you have to have a power cord that can get in the way.  It takes a little practice to get the hang of a pico.

Thanks, could you recommend the model you use? There are  quite a few Pico projectors on Amazon and the prices range is significant.

I started with the KP-101-01 which worked great at first but eventually had issues charging. It lasted me about two years. The cord plugged into the side of the projector so there was always pressure on it which caused it to loosen over time. Now, I use the P5. It's a little more expensive, but the cord comes out of the top so it's more stable and it charges while it's in use. The brightness and image quality is a little bit better too.

This video walks you through how to set up the projector. I found it to be really helpful.

As the author of the Camera Lucida app, I want to try and help out.  If you want to try the iOS app, just email me at lucidapete@gmail.com and I'll send the first 5 folks a code to get it for free.  Julia, let me know if this is frowned upon, ok?  -Pete

This is great, though, if possible, I'd like to "advertise" your offer more broadly on this site in a featured blog post (that more people will see), which I should be able to write over the next few days. Would this work for you? If so, please email me with any imagery, links, or other information about the app that you would like me to include in that blog post. (sweetlife@juliausher.com). Thanks!

Hi Kathy.  Have you tried using any of the apps available for smart phones?  Camera lucida for IPhones, and Fino for Android.  I use the latter and like it so far.

Do you use the same stand and the same cords with the P5 that you used with the KP-101-01?

Same stand. I use this one. The cord is different though. For the KP-101-01, you need a mini HDMI to HDMI cable. For the P5, you just need a standard HDMI cable. You also need an adapter to plug it into your iPhone/iPad (for both projector models). I use this one, but it depends on the model of your device.
