Hello everyone!
I am facing a design dilemma with these darn hats that my mother has insisted upon for her family reunion (the last name is Hatt, and she thinks it's too cute to do hats. Ugh. Lol). She bought the cutter and everything, and wanted 4 dozen cookies.
I have never done an order this large. She is family, so she gets the family price. So . . . in short, I am unmotivated because I wanted to do something else, but she insisted on the hats.
So far I have them flooded with brown icing that I had left over from another project . . . and I'm worried now that was a mistake. They look so plain. I didn't want to do black as the base because it takes up so much colour and turns people's mouths black.
Anyway, I was thinking of adding a band around the hat, and then some drop flowers in nice muted colours (thinking Wilton garden tone set) but I'm worried they will still be ugly.
Does anyone have any suggestions that won't take me forever? I need these to be as simple as possible, but not awful and boring either.
I do not have an airbrush, but I have a few Sugarbelle stencils and two color sprays . . . mint and red (so I don't think that will work to spice up this base).
See picture for (bane of my existence) hats. Even the flood is subpar. I used the dip method for the first time.

I’d add a ribbon, maybe roses and maybe her initials. People love it when it’s personalized. The other option is to make it steampunk

Ooh, I like the steam punk idea but it might be too complicated to do at this point. I have to finish the details today.
Any recommendations on colour? What colour ribbon/roses would you do?
I'm not kidding about being stuck here haha. These hats are killing my creativity. Hold my hand you guys :'(

I’d do a black or white ribbon with red or pink roses. That way the flowers stand out. You can add a feather. I see it in white, but it doesn’t have to be white. If you aren’t looking for the ribbon to stand out I would do yellow, but you need to do something like flower to make it interesting.

GinkgoWerkstatt posted:How about doing some lighter brown ribbon and adding some grain and maybe a little sunflower with one or two leaves? Like if they have been tied to the hat with the band.
Another idea would be to give the hat a little texture. Just use the same brown (or maybe a lighter shade) and add some royal icing, that shouldn't be too stiff, with the help of a brush to the surface. Just to have some little bit sticking here and there.
I did that here as well. It's quickly done, but I think it add that little something to a background to make it less boring.
I love the sunflower idea! I might go that route instead of roses thank you!
I would add a band (with bow possibly) and flowers as you said, but also some simple line (outline) details in the top half and along the brim to add interest throughout, and to delineate the top of the hat from the side, and from the brim.

Not sure what you mean Julia, like maybe some squigly type outlines?
Here's what I've got right now

Since the deadline is tomorrow, I think I'm going to leave these. I definitely think they are not a total fail, but not my proudest work.
Thank you so much everyone for your help! I am so incredibly glad to have this community to inspire me when I am in a slump. ❤️
They look nice! (P.S. No, I didn't mean squiggly lines - I meant contours to mark off the top of the hat and edges of the brim, and also lines along the sides and possibly running vertically. But they look great without.)
Nice work. I LOVE the Hatt Reunion plaque cookie!

Ahh I gotcha maybe I'll try it on a test cookie with an edible marker.
Thanks!

Thank you! That one redeemed the project I think
Love how it came out!
