Challenge #15 – Destination. My husband and I also had the chance to visit Istanbul and I agree with Christine. It is a city that offers considerable inspiration! Her photos of tile and marble reminded me of our hotel (which oddly enough used to be a prison!) In one of the sitting rooms of our hotel, there was a beautiful piece of artwork in the marbling painting style known as ebru. We were able to arrange a visit to see artists at work. Here are some of the paintings we brought home.
The ebru technique manipulates water, paint and splatter in all sorts of interesting way. I decided to use the general theme of marbling as inspiration. I did regular marbling/dipping on the but I added some thinner airbrush color to the dipped cookie. It resulted in all sorts of interesting irregularities which look like surface deposits on actual marble.
Truthfully, I wasn’t sure exactly what I was going for but I am not displeased.

I like those areas pitted by the airbrush coloring - they add a lot of interesting texture! I also appreciate the lesson on ebru - had never seen it before.

I had not seen it either, before we went to Istanbul. It's rather mesmerizing to watch but deceptively complicated to properly execute. I wish I had taken a photo of the artwork in the hotel - it was stunning.
I love the Ebru technique. I tried experimenting with it a few years back but it's not quite the same with royal icing. (Perhaps, one day I will post my experiments.) I'm glad to see that you were inspired by this technique. Your designs and textures create a beautiful backdrop to your flowers.

I would love to see your experiments Christine ! It’s quite the interesting technique, with a deceptive amount of elements at play.
