Would you be willing to share your recipe?  I can never seem to get such sharp impressions.  Mine all kind of run together with any of the recipes I have tried.  Or is there some other trick that I am missing?

I usually let the cookies air-dry overnight. That dries out the outer part of the cookie and helps set the imprint - i.e., the cookie surface spreads less (and the image blurs less) during baking.

Perhaps you have to let dry for 1 or 2 days and not only for one night.
If you have too much humidity in your place, you can replace some of the wheat flour for corn flour as they say in the recipe.
