A preview of part of my upcoming Practice Bakes Perfect challenge entry - if I ever manage to actually finish the set in time for submission. The feathers are royal icing transfers, except the one on the purple cookie, which was piped on - I wanted to compare the two methods. I also compared making transfers on parchment paper and on transparency films (is that the term? the ones you used to project in class?). The icing spread out way more on the films, making for transfers that were badly defined, and took much longer to dry on the plastic than on the paper. The paper was also much easier to peel off. However, the transfers made on the films stayed perfectly flat, wereas the ones on the paper warped a bit and were definitely not flat. I like the look - it gives more volume - but this makes them way more fragile.
I pipe on the same food safe plastic bags that I use to bag cookie to make ri transfers. They are easier to peel off. Also, to avoid breaking the transfer when removing it from the acetate or parchment paper, place it near the edge of your work table, and gently peel away the acetate or parchment paper from underneath.
Lately I used wax paper by mistake (I wasn’t wearing glasses and the box is quite similar), and it worked out great (I made the petals for my nymphaea entry for PBP circles). It doesn’t brittle like parchment paper and it is quite flexible.
