Here is another cookie ushering the New Year Sri Lankan style. The brown depicts a clay lamp widely used in Sri Lanka for all occasions. It is lit to give hope and for new beginnings. The green leaves around depicts betel leaves which is used to gift money and is a symbol of respect. On the sides are rice straws. Rice which is the staple food of Sri Lanka and rice stalks shows the ties people have to the land. On the pink plate is “Milk Rice” a must have breakfast dish for any occasion. Rice is cooked with coconut milk and cut into diamond shapes. Milk rice shows abundance and prosperity. A bunch of bananas is a must on these occasions. I have added money to signify abundance of wealth for the New Year.

The cookie is covered in fondant. The clay lamp, money, rice, bananas and flowers are all made of gum paste. The rice stalks are royal icing transfers.

The best part of this cookie was I used wafer paper as a wick for the clay lamp and was able to light it (something I saw done on one of the Food network competitions). In this photo you see an actual flame.

Wishing Julia @Julia M. Usher and everyone here at Cookie Connection a very happy 2025 blessed with all that is great.
