Hi.  I'm having a hard time deciding if I should put a face on this mermaid cookie...I know it may seem silly but I needed an opinion stat!  I was thinking of just adding two small eyes with an edible marker.  Also, is it safe to add more hair once the cookie is fully dry, I don't like the way the hair came out.  I feel like it should've covered more of her face/arm area, it looks so beige. Any ideas, tips, opinions highly welcomed!

Yes, I think you should add simple faces/eyes as you described. More hair cascading into her face and shoulder zones would be nice too. You can definitely pipe the hair on top of the other icing. It's likely safe to do that (with risk of no bleeding) once a crust has formed on the bottom icing, even if that icing isn't dry all the way through.

Just my opinion though. Any others?

P.S. Be sure to post back here with your finished result. I'm eager to see it!

Have you outlined your cookie cutter on paper and tried to draw a few faces?  I am awful with drawing, but it really seems to help me take the first steps in a safe place.  OR, if you have a multi-purpose scanner/copier/printer...maybe gently turn one of the cookies upside down and copy it and practice drawing what you envision.  I (like most of us) really hate wasting a cookie trying something that doesn't work.  Good luck!  I have a mermaid cutter I haven't used yet because I've been afraid that I couldn't make it "pretty"...you have inspired me to give it a go.  Can't wait to see your end result!

I agree with Julia to have her hair cascading down on her forehead and shoulders. So far the cookie looks great.

You can always have some of the eyes closed and some open, pretty eye lashes and pretty kissing lips.

Post the finished cookie so we can see!

Rather than risk breaking or damaging your cookie by scanning it (which I did recently!), just print out your photo above and sketch sample faces on tracing paper until you get a face that pleases you. Can't wait to see what you come up with! I LOVE mermaids!!

I had to laugh at myself...always making things harder than they need to be...OF COURSE, print out the photo!

Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions!  I followed your advice and added some eyes and additional hair.  I'm pretty happy with how they turned out but next time she'll need a smile.  I will definitely print out the photo next time so I can practice some faces.  I'm so glad this website exists!  Here are some pics

Your seahorse is very pretty too, and I love the bellybutton. Just a thought, if you use this cutter again, maybe give her a slim neck or string of pearls? You could also use the hair to define the space where body becomes neck, then neck becomes face. The hair is a great tool to cover any smudge too, as mermaid hair can be almost as long as she is tall, lol.

For variety with the cutter, you might also be able to do one with location of her face and her hair switched. Sort of swimming face down, but with her head raised to look at something. They turned out great though, good save!
