A Fun Windmill Project

Windmills have always fascinated me! This project has been in the back of my mind for nearly a year but it seemed too daunting to bring it to reality. Finally, I decided to go for it .

It is 12" or 30.48 cm tall with a lot of texture. I made an "awning" of sorts over the front door and over the windows on the top part of the windmill. In retrospect, this wasn't one of my better ideas .  It's amazing what little things I see that were missed or should have been done differently when I look at the pictures! The awning over the front door is too large, covering too much of the door itself. Additionally, the unfinished part underneath the dome itself shows in pictures when I didn't think it would. I didn't cover up the seam where the dome attaches to the windmill.

The arms turned out to be more of a challenge than I originally thought they would be. They are 7.5" or 19cm long. They came together really well and then...that's right, they slipped out of my hands just as I picked them up to attach them to the windmill. Yep! Both arms broke. Ugh!!! Of course I had run out of dough, was in a time crunch, and needed to repair it as best I could. The "patch" job looks pretty rough as a result. I used one of @Manu biscotti decorati's ingenious ideas of adding a straw through the top of the windmill as a support for the arms. Thank you so much Manu!!!! The ends of the straw are covered with fondant.

For the diamond shaped windows on the base, I used clear glycerin sheets to replicate glass. I really like how that looks.

As with all 3D projects, I made a mockup out of construction paper which I show in the process pics here. Overall, it was a great project to work on...it did take a long time to complete. Not surprising given the scope. I'm glad for all that I learned putting it together.

Very fun, indeed! And those are some impressive windmill blades. I am sure it was a feat to get them in place! Thanks too for sharing all of your in-process photos - very educational!

Thanks Julia! It was fun and seemed like it would never be finished. I learned a lot as I always do with my overly ambitious 3D projects. LOL 😂
