Happy New Year and almost Happy Chinese New Year! I was inspired by Chinese Year New and the lanterns they use to celebrate. I started out using the crackle effect technique on the unbaked lantern cookies by adding white americolor food coloring prior to baking. Once baked, I stared piping on the design. I used my projector stand to hold the cookie and help me with the vertical lines. I normally use tipless piping bags so I learned a lot about piping with a tip verse just a bag. I didn’t have a size 0 tip so I used a size 1. I think the size 1 was a little too large for this project since the stringwork is a little more bulky than I’d prefer.
@Gwen Safriet Your red colored stringwork is gorgeous! Top layer of vertical strings really help to emphasize the depth and dimension of the layered stringwork. How did you find working with tips as compared to working with tipless bags? Did you find that you had better control of the lines that you piped?

Thank you so much! I loved using the piping tip. I didn’t have to worry at all about pressure, especially since I used such a stiff piping consistently. This was such a unique challenge. I’m excited to use it in future cookies.

I'm really glad to hear that. Tipless bags can be wonderful to use but there are some intricate piping details that are best achieved with a tip. You really did a fantastic job of combing pattern and color. I hope to see more of your beautiful stringwork cookies.
These are so creative @Gwen Safriet! Such a great idea to begin with a crackled background for the red string piping. It works well together . Great work and these definitely look like some of the Chinese lanterns I've seen before. Great work ❤️❤️❤️ Hugs...
