March 3rd is Girls’ Festival in Japan.   Especially in our area, we make and hang Sagemon (hanging) to celebrate and pray girls’ healthy lives.  Stuffed sagemon is made of Kimono cloth.  And mine is cookie, yes!

Usually they consist of 51 items (7 items in one string and7 strings,  this means 49 items and 2 beautifully decorated balls) this is because in old days the life-span was considered 49 years old but to have longer life 2 items were added. Each item has meaning and each one presents one year of her life.

peach (fruit): accomplishment
dove: symbol of happiness and peace, beautiful voice
turtle: longevity
baby: newly born baby, why red?  Because we call baby aka-cyan and aka means redrabbit: run and play in snow mountain vigorously
goldfish: swim slowly and elegantly
sakura (cherry blossom): pleasure to the eye

Are you ready to celebrate Girls’ Day?

Anyway your sagemon will be my best!!

Thank you! for your comment.   Have a good time in Yanagawa. They have good Unagi  (eel, just for other people to understand).   I assume you are going to ride a boat which has a kotatsu (low desk covered by blanket, this is warm) now.

Amazing set and amazing story again, Ryoko!

Hi Zara, thank you.  I want to show you the real one, oh not my cookies but this hanging.   You can see these only in certain areas in Japan.  It takes about 2-hours drive from here.   (Can you come? )  Here, we celebrate girls' festival with different kind of dolls.

Amazing cookies, colors and design! And I love to hear about the tradition behind them.

I am amazed also.  This is very local tradition and I did not expect many people are interested in.   And colors, yes I spent a little more time than usual to decide which colors I use.   I am glad that I can have a chance to introduce something Japanese .
