All of the fruit is 100% gingerbread sized and molded by hand using real fruit as a guide. Pieces were baked at a very low temperature and then left to air harden for several months.  Once they hardened they were covered in fondant and let to dry again.  The grapes were glued / formed together using an edible glue and left to dry, then edible glitter was applied.  The apples, bananas and oranges are covered in homemade gelatin sequence, applied one at a time using an edible glue until completely covered. The basket also contained pears, sugar plums, cinnamon sticks, star anise, strawberries, blackberries and cherries. The basket is 100% gingerbread baked over a foil covered cornucopia basket at a very low temperature. Raw gingerbread was rolled and put into a mold to make the roping which covered the entire outside of the basket to give it it's basket weave look. The gingerbread was then dusted with a shimmering copper petal dust.

Thanks so much for all of the details! Did you place in the competition?

This was for the 2017 National Gingerbread Competition in Asheville, NC which I have participated in since 2007.  This piece did not even place in the top 10.  I have placed several times previously with my highest tying for third.  This was a nice piece, however competition is extremely tough every year.  If my piece makes it to competition in one piece, I've accomplished quite a feat. It's about the journey, the experience of creating something that may not have ever been done and sharing those results.

I agree with your philosophy about competitions!
