The original printed image in the attached photo had only three lines extending from each point. I added several more lines for complexity and to create visual interest. I then "sketched" out two royal icing transfers by placing a sheet of acetate over the image and tracing the pattern. This allowed me to work out any flaws (such as the clustered peaks at each point) and to determine the order in which I wanted to pipe the lines before I created my cookie. For the transfer on the left, I piped the center lines extending from each point first with each outer line then being piped in sequence. The transfer on the right is piped in reverse so that the center lines end up on top. Piping sequence is an important factor as it determines the overall look of the finished piece.
I wanted to emphasize the circles in this pattern (playing on a rainbow's arc) so I went with the transfer on the left, piping the lines in the following order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet.
To transfer my design, I placed the pattern over top of the cookie and marked out each of the 16 points. I then drew the lines that connect the various points with a black food marker and began piping my lines - it's really that simple. The hardest part was being able to follow the black lines amidst all of my previously piped lines!
